Modern medicine has advanced leaps and bounds, with new technology and various non-invasive procedures available to cure diseases. The internet has made the common man more aware of what is going on in every industry around the world, but there is a fine line between helpful solutions and gimmicks. Whilst one can probably find a solution to most problems, one must be aware of gimmicks and hoax products.
In recent history, a corrective eye sight lens has been introduced in the market, by the name of Ortho-K. The Express Tribune talks to their sales manager Susan Yang about the technology at their outlet in Y block Market Lahore. “This lens is an alternative to Lasik or laser surgery,” begins Yang, “It is designed for night time use, and basically massages the cornea and redistributes the cells in order to make the cornea flatter.”
Yang proposes that with the use of this lens while sleeping, the patient will be able to gain an eye sight of 20/20 throughout the day. This would successfully aid in conducting a normal life without glasses or other supportive lenses to combat Myopia (commonly known as short sightedness).
“You avoid surgery, and in the same amount of money you get a non-invasive temporary cure for Myopia,” continues Yang. While it is a well-documented fact that ophthalmologists condemn the usage of contact lens overnight, Ortho-K is specifically designed only for night time wear. Ortho-K provides temporary relief, and Susan Yang proposes that it’s well suited for children as they can get rid of glasses and enjoy life otherwise.
The introduction of Ortho-K makes one wonder about the fate of more common procedures, such as laser surgery. “Laser surgery is extremely profitable,” says Yang. “It’s a very easy procedure to do and the doctor is not liable for the consequences after the surgery takes place.”
However, according to doctors and some online reviews, Ortho-K can be harmful.
“This practice is a gimmick, and not an authentic form of treatment,” says Dr Nasir Chaudhry, a practicing ophthalmologist at Mayo Hospital. “As one grows older, myopia increases due to the increase in length of the eye ball, and so far science has not been able to find a solution to the problem.”
Dr Chaudhry urges people to understand that change in curvature of the cornea does not affect the condition, as the images are formed inside the eye and the cornea is merely a receptor.
“Laser is reasonably permanent, with a higher success rate of 75% to 80% that one will get rid of glasses and lenses for life, granted they are viable candidates for laser surgery,” continues Dr Chaudhry.
While all medicines have side effects, Ortho-K users are found to be diagnosed with corneal ulcers. “There are hundreds of recorded cases of severe infections, and ulcers that can lead to one losing their eye,” says Dr Chaudhry. “While the idea seems appealing and hassle-free, there is a reason ophthalmologists stress that patients not use lenses during the night, and Ortho-K is no different.”
The doctor further explains its detrimental effects on children. “Introducing lenses to children at such an early age is harmful to the eye, and once the cornea gets disturbed there can be no further correction.”
While Ortho-K claims to be a cost-effective solution, the lenses are priced at Rs60,000 and will need to be replaced every three years. Alternatively, Lasik/laser surgery can be done for between Rs30,000 to 50,000 and is a more permanent solution.

This obviously is a scam guys ,don't fall for it. @Samina
Your link leads us to a blog and then from there to a company page.Should we believe the ones selling such projects to make up our mind. Better get something out the medical text.Thank you.
realy bad and fake opinion of dr nasir chudhry .....dr nasir you should have to thourghly study about orthokeratology and than give your opinion about this internationly standard porocedure of myopia reduction...actuly in pakistan there is no contect lens prectionar, opticians recomended soft contect lens to thier clients.and there is also no concept of RGP lenses for myopia reduction.all these thing are new for pakistanies because we are a poor nations.
first i want to ans dr chudhry exuse me sir the effectiveness and safty of orthokeratology is approved by FDA first in 1994 and then in 2002.link of study is here http://bit.ly/HLhdZ3. ortho k are prectised in more than 40 coutries in world...secondly ortho k are made from riged gas permiable material which allow siffiecent oxygen to pass through both in day and during nigh.the health of cornea wl not be compromised when you wear ortho k during sleep.because the material of ortho k lenes are Boston XO which is designed by BAUSCH and LOMB for overnight wear. ortho k lenses(RGP) are very differnt from soft lenses..ortho k lenses has less than 1% water content which means that ortho k dont require water to mainten its shape.in the opposie soft lenses needs high water content to mainten the shape of lens aand to provide oxygen to cornea and after long time of wear soft lenses will dry out and start to absorm from tears in order to provide oxygen to cornea and that is exactly patient gets dry eyes and allergies after long time wear of soft lenses. on the other hand ortho k does not absorb tear from your eyes to provide oxygen because ortho k mterial(RGP) can allow oxygen to pass through the lens which soft lens can not.DK (which stand for oxygen permiabilty) of ortho k lenses is very very high.Dk of ortho k is 100 it meets the requirement for ovenight wear. what about soft lenses??it is usually below 30...this is the two main logic how orho k can wear at night........hopefully guise all of you will understand my points because it is noted from different intrnationly published reaserch paper about orthokeratology..
strong textfirst i want to ans dr chudhry..excuze me sir the effectiveness and safty of orthokeratology is approved by FDA ( food and Drug administration) first in 1994 and then 2002. orthokeratology prectised in more than 40 countries in world. the link of internationl studies is here http://bit.ly/HLhdZ3. secondly ortho k is made from rigid gas permiable materil which allow sufficent oxygen to pass through both in day and during night.the health of cornea wl not be comromiised when you wear ortho k lenses during sllep..because of Boston XO material of ortho k lenses which is designed by Bausch and Lomb for nightwear..water content of ortho k lenses is less than 1 % it means ortho k lenses does not require water to maintain its shape..on the other hand soft contect lenses needs high water content to mainten the shape of lens and to provide oxygen to cornea ...after long time of wear soft lenses will dry out and start to absorb from tear to provide oxygen to cornea and that is why patient get dry eyes and allergies by wearing soft lenses for long time....but ortho k material does not absorb tear from your eye to provide oxygenbecause ortho k material can allow oxygen to pass through lens which soft leses can not. DK(oxygen permiability) of ortho k lens is ver very high.ortho k has 100 DK,it meats the requirement for over nightwear. what about soft lenses it is usually below 30..so that is the logic how is it possible we wear ortho k at night .....hopefully all guise of you will under stand my points because i code these points from diifernt internationly publishd research paper....
@Pakistan Khan If Ortho-K is sooo dangerous then why USA have several doctors practising it ???? Don't you think there government would have a regulating body for these things ???? From your point of view we could easily state that lives are a joke for many developed countries government !!!!!
@Lilith: How can you say that doctor is not updated with new technologies? How can you say that they are biased? Its related to the safety human beings. Human beings are no joke. No country allows any medicine or treatment without making sure that its safe. So show some empathy for the people who might be effected by Ortho-K if its not safe!!!
Wow, you wonderful Pakistanis, you have done it again. There is a reason this country is shamefully behind in all the modern technologies of the world. Anything which sounds remotely feasible and less complicated, is always seen as suspicious. Ortho K is an established procedure, with which thousands of people have been cured in the U.S. A number of top international universities have published research on it. Just use google, (or any sensible university student can just search in academic journals), and find the truth for yourself. Quoting a doctor of "Mayo hospital" (who is probably still stuck with his 40 years knowledge of his M.B.B.S degree) and accepting his opinion over all the current international medical research findings says a lot about the quality of this news report and the author's opinion!
Pakistan is a country where you can sell fake drugs and everything. Due to lack of government oversight and strict regulation, these fake drugs and cures are killing innocent people. One wonders if this Ortho-K thing was even approved by any government authority. If some doctors, as mentioned in the article, suggest that Ortho-K does more harm than good, then why Ortho-K has not been stopped from working in Pakistan yet! Seems like human lives are a joke in this country.
Thanks E.T. You have open up my eyes.I was about to make fall in that trap. Ortho-k certainly doesn't look Ok.
Are you Serious ??? Do you have any idea that what is orthokeratology ??? I never thought that Tribune can be sometime so spammy with no evidence and logic. There is a proper procedure for medical blogging. First of all you need to be from medical origin. Secondly, you can't get all the desired data from just 1 or 2 doctors. You need to have a proper acknowledgement from Internet. But I don't think that the above article fulfill even 1 requirement.
One thing I learnt after reading this article is that "We Pakistanis will remain behind for everything. May be that's the reason why West are so superior then us. We are not innovators and at the same time we resist if something new comes."
My Advice :-" Do conduct proper research before completing any article.. Make appointments with some more doctors, Research orthokeratology on "Google" effectively. Update this article after collecting significant data.
for all the people bashing the article and the opthalmologist, go ahead, use the lenses. clearly doctors who spend 7 - 8 years training know nothing but this chinese lady and your corner optician, who prolly didnt even go to college does. So go ahead, use it. and when you need a corneal transplant, dont go to the bloodsucking doctors. And Mayo Hospital is a government institution, the poor doctor didnt have much to gain from lying. Everyone is an expert.
the journalist had no idea about Ortho K, it is being practiced in many countries, (USA, Taiwan, hongkong, UK, Canada) ET your journalists need to do some homework before publishing a story!
