RIYADH: Saudi health authorities announced on Sunday a new death caused by MERS, bringing to 53 the number of fatalities in the kingdom by the coronavirus.

The health ministry gave no details on the latest death in the country most affected by the disease that first appeared in the Gulf state in September 2012.

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has so far cost 64 lives worldwide, according to a November 4 update by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Experts are struggling to understand MERS, for which there is no vaccine.

It is considered a deadlier but less-transmissible cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Like SARS, MERS appears to cause a lung infection, with patients suffering from a temperature, cough and breathing difficulty.

But it differs in that it also causes rapid kidney failure and the extremely high death rate has caused serious concern.

In August, researchers pointed to Arabian camels as possible hosts of the virus.

Ejaaz | 11 years ago | Reply @1984 Have you ever been to KSA? You think people there are languishing in poverty while the royal family lives in utmost luxury? Wow you must be seriously deluded if you think so. You must be out of your mind to compare the living standards of north korea and KSA. If there one thing that the people of KSA have in abundance, it is money. There is some poverty in inner regions that are very remote. But to think of comparing the quality of life in Riyadh to Karachi or Mumbai would be just foolish. The roads are wide and smooth, the cars are big and every family has a couple and they don't stay in matchbox sized flats like people do in Karachi or Mumbai. If they wouldn't have money trust me by now it would have seen a revolution already. Since there is no political freedom. Failure to build a world class hospital is not equivalent to keeping all the wealth for themselves. Building a world class hospital requires more than just building a large concrete structure. And that takes time. I am not absolving the royal family of doing more. In any case, KSA still has more doctors per person than both India and Pakistan.
