LAHORE: With Dama Dam Mast Kalandar and Wey Main Chori Chori, folk singer Reshma touched many hearts. When she passed away earlier this week, her fans were deeply saddened. At the Cultural Association of Pakistan Graduates’ (CAPG) meeting on Tuesday, members expressed their grief on her passing and honoured one of South Asia’s finest folk singers. The association members also offered Fateha for the departed soul and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved to bear the irreparable loss.

CAPG is a small civil-society organisation that gathers to pay tribute to local artists. It is headed by lawyer and politician SM Zafar.

Reshma was the queen of folk music in Pakistan who dedicated her whole life to promoting quality folk music, said Zafar, the chief patron of the association. Although a chapter of this genre of music has been closed after her departure from the world, Zafar added that her songs will still be sung and cherished for years to come.

The legend was given the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the government of Pakistan for her services in the field of music and was also awarded numerous graduate awards for singing on the radio, films and television. From numbers such as Hai O Rabba Nahion Lagda Dil Mera and Sun Charkhe Di Mithi Mithi Cook to Ankhiyan No Rehen De Ankhyan De Kol Kol, all her songs became hits. Some were even copied by Bollywood music composers and singers.

During her tour to India, Reshma even met former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi, said Jameel Gishkori, secretary general of CAPG. He presented the condolence resolution which stated that the harmonic voice of Reshma is now silent.

M Saeed Khan, Ali Zafar, Khalid Ghias, Rafique Khawar, Yasmin Saigol, Khurshid Akhtar Khan, Shahida Tahir and Qadeer Saigol also graced the event.
