ISLAMABAD: The city police produced the main suspect in a liquor smuggling case before district and sessions judge Uzma Chughtai on Wednesday.

Details of the main accused Malik Tariq’s statement were not made public but court sources told The Express Tribune that he had provided a list of 30 people (including some police officers) who had been helping him run the liquor business. These claims could not be officially verified.

The accused has moved a bail plea which will be taken up in his next hearing on the 15th of this month.

The court had also summoned the former SP Sadar Circle, Liaqat Ali Khan to record his statement about the case on Thursday. Khan was surrendered to the establishment division last Saturday on charges of taking bribes from the liquor dealer Tariq.

Ironically, Khan is the same police officer who had seized two separate consignments of imported liquor in two separate raids, which amounted to a total of 42,000 bottles.

Police officials said that the real motive behind surrendering the SP was to get rid of him as he had become an irritant for liquor smugglers. A judicial inquiry into the matter, ordered by the Supreme Court, is already underway.
