ISLAMABAD:

Students of National University of Sciences and Technology’s (NUST) school of social sciences celebrated the 81st birthday of Dr Robert Alexander Mundell on Thursday.

Dr Zafar Mehmood, a professor at the school and a former student of the renowned economist gave a short lecture on the life and achievements of Mundell which led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics.

The lecture followed a cake-cutting ceremony where students from NUST’s economic department exchanged ideas over Mundell’s contributions to the field.

The event was organised by the NUST Economics Society with an aim to initiate a debate over how future economists of Pakistan can exceed in their field.

Dr Ather Maqsood Ahmed, the head of the Economics department, said Robert Mundell is one of the greatest minds in Economics and a role model for all students worldwide.

The head of the student society, Abu Bakar, said “By celebrating Mundell’s birthday, we wanted to pay a tribute to his contribution to Economics and it is an honour for us that one of the Nobel Laureate’s students is teaching us here”.

Mundell was born in Canada and received the Nobel Prize in 1999 for his pioneering work in monetary dynamics and optimum currency areas.

He is currently a professor of Economics at Columbia University, USA and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
