Umar ready for South Africa

Batsman to make comeback in ODI series after CPL episode.

KARACHI: Pundits started speculating the end of the road for Umar Akmal in international cricket soon after he was sent back abruptly from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) following an illness thought to be an ‘epileptic seizure’.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as precaution amidst impressions of Umar being ‘medically unfit’, dropped the stylish batsman from the Zimbabwe tour, perhaps igniting further speculations over his career. The batsman however, declared himself fit.

The extensive examination that was carried out by neurologists later confirmed the player was well, and blamed his sickness on sleep deprivation.

Now named in the five-match One-Day International squad for the South Africa series, Umar will return to international cricket after over three months since the saga.

The 23-year old, set to make a comeback, stated that he was fully prepared to give his best against South Africa.

“There is no rustiness,” said Umar, while expressing his resolve to make his contribution for Pakistan.

“I have not been out of action after the tour of West Indies. I’ve been working hard at the National Cricket Academy with coaches and I played club cricket regularly.”

He reiterated he has no grievance with the PCB over the earlier episode.

“I am thankful to the PCB as they showed so much concern for me. They treated me like a family member.”

Meanwhile, Umar, who was introduced in the dual roles of wicket-keeper and batsman during the tour of the West Indies, said he would give his 100% if given the chance again.

“I am enjoying my wicket-keeping. I don’t think I have lost rhythm and I will try to repeat the performance I showed against the West Indies.”

He further commented on the second Test, believing that Pakistan could make a comeback in the match despite being held back on the opening day.

Riaz hopes to be effective in UAE

Fast-bowler Wahab Riaz is also eyeing to excel in the upcoming series.

“The UAE pitches help in reverse swing,” said Riaz. “This is what we also witnessed on the opening day [yesterday].

“I am fit and if given the chance, I wilI try to give my best.”

Riaz, who is struggling for a permanent place in team, said he was not discouraged and would continue with his hard work.
