Mumtaz Jhakrani becomes latest member of Sindh Cabinet

Jhakrani administered oath of office by Governor Sindh, but not allotted a portfolio yet.

KARACHI: The Sindh provincial government expanded its cabinet on Monday as MPA Mumtaz Jhakrani took oath at the Governor house.

Jhakrani, who has previously served as the taluka nazim for Jacobabad, becomes the 17th minister to be added to the Sindh cabinet. So far, he has not been officially allotted a portfolio. Though some reports hinted that he may be given charge of the ministry for labour.

Various MPAs and ministers were present as Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad administered the oath of office to Jhakrani.

While the previous government had a rather large cabinet, consisting 45 members. However, after provisions contained in the 18th amendment came into effect after a new government was elected in May. Per the new provisions, a provincial assembly can only have a cabinet 11 per cent of the size of the provincial assembly, which restricts the 166 member Sindh assembly's cabinet to the size of 18, with five advisors.

Prior to Jhakrani's oath taking, the Sindh cabinet had 16 ministers and two advisors.
