Australia started their seven-match One-Day International series in India with a resounding 72 run win over the hosts, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Batting first, Australia amassed 308 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Captain George Bailey and Aaron Finch were the stars with scores of 85 and 72 runs respectively. Finch hit three sixes in his 79-ball innings while Bailey smashed 10 fours as they propelled the Australians to a handsome first-innings score.

The India batting line-up failed to perform, losing wickets at regular intervals. Virat Kohli top-scored with 61 accumulated off 85 balls. Rohit Sharma scored 42 before falling to Shane Watson.

The hosts failed to build any solid partnerships and were bowled out for 232 in the last over. The Australia bowlers maintained a stronghold over their opponents throughout with James Faulkner returning impressive figures of three for 47 in eight overs. Clint Mckay and Shane Watson grabbed two scalps each.

Bailey, who was named man-of-the-match, hailed the performance of this side.

“It was a fantastic all-round performance,” he said. “There were a couple of times India got on top, but to our bowlers’ credit, they found a way to fight back. We were looking at 300 from the start so it was important we started well. But it is going to be a bit of a war of attrition this series.”

The second match of the series will take place in Jaipur on October 16.
