PARACHINAR:

Two children were severely injured in two separate landmine explosions in Upper Kurram Agency on Saturday.

The first incident occurred in Tri Mangal village near the Pak-Afghan border when Abdur Rahim, 9, accidentally stepped on a landmine outside his house, informed a political administration official from Parachinar. The boy was rushed to Agency Headquarters Hospital where his leg had to be amputated, he added.

The official said the second incident occurred in Gobzana area where Husnain stepped on another landmine on the road and was also seriously injured. Husnain’s leg, too, had to be amputated. He added security forces surrounded the area soon after the incident and launched a search operation, but no one has yet been arrested.

On Wednesday, two tribesmen lost their legs after stepping on landmines in Pewar and Boshehra area of Upper Kurram. Others are frequently injured or killed in similar incidents. The landmines in the agency are either remnants of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan or those planted by militants to target convoys of security forces.
