HYDERABAD:

Disgruntled by the apathetic response of the police, the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) teachers, staff and students took it upon themselves to evict squatters from the university's land on Friday.

After staging a token demonstration for around 30 minutes on Super Highway in Jamshoro, around 400 protesters marched towards the land where the squatters had set-up tents. According to the MUET's security officer Ghazi Khan Parehar, the land-grabbers opened fire on the teachers and staff and escaped the spot. "They then took refuge in a nearby petrol pump but the security guards and the police caught them."

Police sources said that two men, Sikander and Sajid, believed to be police constables, were arrested. No FIR against the land grabbing or the firing incident has been registered, despite complaints. "I have asked Jamshoro SSP Wasee Hyder to register a case. They [squatters] opened fire on our employees," said MUET registrar Dr Taha Hussain Ali.

Dr Ali was of the view that the police appears to be evasive, adding that they would file a complaint in the court on Saturday if the police do not register one.

Some 250 acres meant for the expansion of the varsity have allegedly been occupied by Special Branch SSP Farooq Ahmed Jamali's men.
