Police arrested a man and registered an illegal weapons case against him after his wife tried to take his gun into the district and sessions court complex on Tuesday, refusing to release him even after he produced his gun licence.
Kaneez Fatima, who was carrying the gun in a plastic bag, was stopped for a search when she tried to enter the courts via the main gate next to Baba Ground. Constable Simaab Mushtaq searched her and found the 0.30-bore pistol in the bag.
Fatima told the policewoman that the weapon belonged to her husband Muhammad Fayyaz and he had a licence. She said that he had told her to wait outside while he went inside to attend a hearing. But he had not come out and she was going inside to try and find him, she said.
The police officials detained the woman and informed Islampura police. Meanwhile, her husband turned up at the gate. He told security personnel that he had the licence at home and would show it to them.
However, both husband and wife were taken to Islampura police station. The Islampura SHO said that an FIR had been registered against Fayyaz when he was brought to the station, as he did not have the licence at the time. The SHO said that the licence had been brought to the police station later in the evening, but it had been “too late” as an FIR had already been registered, so Fayyaz remained in lock-up.
He said Fayyaz’s wife had been released without charge.
