ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday granted bail to Kanwal, wife and alleged accomplice of Sikander, the man responsible for the Jinnah Avenue standoff.

The division bench of IHC comprising Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui granted bail against a surety bond of Rs200,000. An anti-terrorism court (ATC) had rejected her bail on September 5 and she had been in Adiala Jail since then. The police had booked the couple on various counts, including charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

The bench accepted the bail plea Kanwal had filed on September 27, after counsels of both sides concluded their arguments. Advocate Kalsoom Khaliq, representing Kanwal, argued that her client was not involved in this case as she was completely unaware of this incident, adding that she was merely following the instructions of her husband so that her children stayed safe.

The defence counsel contended that the rejection of the bail plea by the trial court was illegal and should be set aside. He requested that the court order her release. However standing counsel, Mian Manzoor Ahmed, opposed the argument and maintained that the accused was equally responsible. He contended that she had accompanied her husband to Murree and had assisted him during the whole episode.
