MINGORA/ SHANGLA: At least 41 new patients were confirmed to be dengue positive on Sunday, taking the total number of patients in Besham tehsil, Shangla  to 160.

The Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Besham has only 14 beds and limited nursing staff. The lack of space has forced patients to be treated under the open sky. A majority of those infected are children.

Noor Alam, a dengue patient complained they were facing a number of problems at THQ Hospital. It does not have a sufficient supply of dengue diagnosis tests, said Alam. To add to the general sense of misery, private laboratories were charging Rs1,000 per patient for
the test.

The hospital lacked basic treatment facilities and had no mosquito nets available for patients admitted to the wards, said another patient Haidar Ali.

Hospital Incharge Muhammad Sohail explained the hospital was treating patients using all the resources at hand. Around 100 patients have been discharged after treatment, added Sohail.

Meanwhile, 90 new cases of dengue were identified in Swat on Sunday. Of these patients, 74 were admitted to the Saidu Teaching Hospital (STH). This has pushed the total count of patients registered at STH to 4,124.

According to the District Health Office, the district has recorded a total 7,796 dengue patients – 5,352 males and 2,444 females.

Another 36 patients were discharged from STH on Sunday after complete recovery. “At present, 177 patients are admitted at the dengue cell of STH, including 131 males and 46 females,” said STH spokesperson Dr Wasil Ahmad.
