A general store in Chiniot was reduced to ashes on Friday in a fire that was started by a spark in live electricity wires passing over the store.
Nabeel Akbar, owner of the store in Thathi Colony, said that a bunch of electricity wires passed above his store. He said he had requested officials from the Faisalabad Electricity Supply Company (Fesco) subdivision office to either remove them of secure them, but no once came to fix the problem.
He said he had noticed sparking in the wires a few days ago and informed the Fesco office once again. He said there was no response from anyone.
On Friday morning, he said, there was a spark that resulted in a fire. The fire, he said, spread across his store, gutting the building in hours.
He said he and his helpers ran outside and informed Rescue 1122. The fire was put out in three hours. No one was injured in the incident.
Akbar estimated the losses at Rs5 million.
He said he had filed a complaint against the Fesco officials concerned, whose negligence and lethargy, he added, had caused him the loss.
When contacted, Fesco officials said they had not been informed about the wires.
