Sexy copy as it makes, I always thought this was an incomplete story. For one, the Hindu right wants to cause no world war and it doesn’t want to exterminate Muslims from Indian soil. Its idea of those following religions that did not originate in India is to make them second class citizens. Abominable as it may be, it can’t be compared with what Hitler tried with Jews.
“Iconophilia”, an art historian friend explained. The love of images and icons. Most books bought don’t get read and that’s true of Mein Kampf too. It’s for the bookshelves, for its iconophilic value. Its owner is fascinated by Hitler as a human figure.
This is what explains Mr Che Kabir. A businessman in Delhi — a capitalist! — named his son Che, after Che Guevara. Then he thought the name carried too much of a history of violence; he was only interested in revolution, not violence. So, he gave his son the middle name Kabir, the saint who was half Hindu and half Muslim.
In other words, great historical figures can become just their images. What they wrote, thought, stood for, can become immaterial. Or, at best, their ideas can be taken in part, the inconvenient parts discarded. So it is that the RSS and the Hindu right in general have made Bhagat Singh their own — Bhagat Singh who was a communist, Bhagat Singh who wrote a pamphlet called “Why I am an atheist”, Bhagat Singh who was reading Lenin before he was hanged.
The BJP has similarly accepted Ambedkar, whose image it uses to mobilise Dalits. Ambedkar who renounced Hinduism, Ambedkar who led a mass conversion to Buddhism, Ambedkar who thought that the caste system and its brutal impact on Dalits will not end till Hinduism exists. That Ambedkar is found in a giant portrait outside the BJP office on his birth and death anniversaries!
It is in the same vein that LK Advani went to Pakistan and praised Jinnah. The Congress’ enemy could only be my friend, Advani’s logic. Praising the founder of an Islamic Republic in contrast to Nehruvian Congress could only bolster the justification for the Hindu right’s idea of creating a Hindu Republic. But the RSS didn’t get the nuance and rapped Advani in the knuckles.
Yet, top RSS leaders were in attendance at a grand launch for a book on Gandhi at Gandhi Smriti in Delhi last year. Trying to reinvent Gandhi for the‘internet age’, the book was authored by Advani’s aide, Sudheendra Kulkarni. Gandhi, who the average right-wing Hindu hates for trying to save Muslim lives during Partition and other reasons. Now an RSS icon! After all, Gandhi was a Hindu who took Ram’s name (so what if he also read the Holy Quran and the Bible?). At least he wasn’t an atheist like Nehru!
I was thus not surprised to see Narendra Modi appropriate Gandhi. I am forged from the soil that produced Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi, he said recently in Mumbai (forgetting that Jinnah was also a Gujarati). And Sardar Patel, that Congressman who banned the RSS after Gandhi’s assassination, will soon get a gift from Modi: a statue taller than the Statue of Liberty.
This smart behaviour of the Hindu right, using all kinds if icons to broaden their base, is seen in use by few others. The Indian left will try to find problems with an icon’s ideas, rather than points of convergence. But it still does manage to find icons acceptable to it, such as Kabir. The Dalit movement, at large, has revived icons from the anti-caste and anti-Brahminism movements and histories to further Ambedkarite mobilisation.
You won’t see the use of icons for mobilisation by the Congress party. Any icon there will clash with the centrality of the Nehru dynasty.

Pakistanis idolise Jinnah. His pictures can be seen everywhere in Pakistan. I guess Pakistanis are "iconophilic" as well.
@Rakib:
Nationwide, India hasn't had one party rule for 30+ years. But the pre-eminent party gets to do what it wants in most cases.
Besides, There have been many BJP ruled states without any other party support. The communal riot study of past 50+ years shows that there have been least amount of communal riots in states ruled by BJP as versus congress.
Even in recent past the biggest communal riots have happened in Congress & SP ruled states.
There is no empirical evidence to suggest India will be any worse off by a BJP led NDA rule than Congress led UPA rule. But, economically there is data to show, India is better off with NDA as job creation is much higher with their progressive (instead of populist) policies.
@antanu - it was fraud done by digvijay singh as far as burkha episode is concern. The taylor him self said that the bill shown by diggy are not bill and quotation and he ddint supplied any burkhas, 4-5 lakhs people cant be purchased for each and every rally, have little logic , dont depend so much on paid media
@x: ( You can not be half Hindu, half Muslim)
You are theoretically quite correct. However, there are many communities that prefer a bouquet of religions. In specific case of Kabir there is a third angle & that is Sikhism. Though his birth & death both are shrouded in some mystery it's generally believed that Kabir the Julaha of Benares (1440-1518) was abandoned by Hindu parents & brought up by a poor Muslim weaver. Weavers were low caste. Therefore by birth he was a Hindu, by upbringing a Muslim & socially a Dalit. But later Kabir became a disciple of Hindu Sant Ramananda. He also became an important personage for Sikhs. In their Adi Granthsahib, after the Gurus the highest number of stanzas/hymns are written by Kabir, venerated by millions worldwide. So what was he, Hindu-Muslim-Sikh, or all three, or, none of those or Sufi or Bhagat? Who knows!
@harkol: India has been ruled by BJP, a political front for RSS. It didn’t go to the dogs.
India was never ruled by BJP nor will it ever be so ruled. It was NDA that was in power. RSS-men like Vajpayee & Advani were kept in check by 20 other Coalition partners of NDA many of who were "Secular" as per their claims. Advani-Vajpayee dared not risk their government with any more mosque-temple demolitions or new civil code for Muslims or robbing Kashmiris of Art 370. Irrespective of Party whoever becomes the next PM will also stick to the same straight & narrow.
@J T: Et moderators please allow. You can not be half Hindu, half Muslim because being a Muslim means belief in ONLY one God and no idol worshipping otherwise you're doing 'shirk' which makes you a non-Muslim. Being a Hindu means belief in the gods. So one negates the other. You have to choose, sorry. Interestingly, Gita (I'm pretty sure this was the one) contains verses which hint at the arrival of Muhammad (PBUH). But that's neither here nor there.
@gp65: Wasting logic, reason on a fool?what that makes you? you are better than that.very poor column, standard ranting of self loathing pseudo Hindu,no where to hide.get a life, bum, Vij. Modi and RSS sells in Pakistan and in UPA/Congress circles.Poor soul!
This is an article of half baked facts and ill formed opinions.
India has been ruled by BJP, a political front for RSS. It didn't go to the dogs. Advani, a hardline Hindutva icon, was projected as a fascist. He was home minister and Deputy PM of India, but nothing earth shaking happened.
It is fashionable for these communist sympathisers to bad mouth BJP, which has done far less harm than the so called secular-leftist Congress.
So, Mr. Vij. Continue to froth in your mouth. We'll vote as we see fit.
And one more thing......MODI (BJP) ordered for 10000 BURQAS which could be used by its workers to give impression thta Muslims are with BJP and again...arrangements were made to BUY a gathering of 15000 Muslims in MODI meeting @Rs.600/- per head (WATCH NEWS 24 with its sting operation). So such is our next ICON of indian polity.....
"No one can be half Hindu and half Muslim…"
@Arsalan Mujahid: Why not?
@Arsalan Mujahid... I m... And scores of ppl in India...
No one can be half Hindu and half Muslim...
wow libtard Lefties have problem that "others" have claimed their marketing tool. Hindu right have no right over words like Gandhi, Ambedkar, Patel or peace because these words are money making tools for these NGO chhap Lefties . Problem with these lefties is that they have learned this craft from West , where the "educated ones" have to use ruler or the government supported ideologies to propagate their influence and remain in power centers.
they are not used to talking to common man , they dont even know their language to communicate with them .
It’s the basic hindu philosophy. No one is perfect. All things exist in duality. Just because you disagree on some points with other doesn’t make other your eternal enemy.
Even Ravan is not hated in India even though he fought Ram. Only his evil deeds are criticized.Else he is regarded as a great scholar who was also brave. On the other hand Ram is also criticized for his short comings and also worshipped for his virtues.
There is no concept of 'other' in hindusim, otherwise Bhuddha won’t be revered in India though he rejected the religion of the day.
So why should BJP or RSS reject all other non-BJP, non-RSS Indians. Why should it not value their wisdom and accept their valid argument or philosophies??
Only one icon stands taller than everyone else and no one seems to have figured out how to fit him in their own narrow agenda: Subhas Chandra Bose.
It is quite apparent that India has gone into election mode, though a bit early.........and like all election modes the ' tamasha ' and the ' real thing ' are hard to distinguish.
Nehru himself praised RSS for its voluntary work in Sino India war and as mark of respect it participated in REPUBLIC DAY PARADE.......
The caste system is a bane. Modi himself comes from a backward caste......One of the set objectives of RSS is to unite Hindus.....
Please don't pick and choose facts as they suit you.......
