Asian U19 rugby event kicks off in Lahore

Pakistan to take on Afghanistan today.

KARACHI: After holding the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship Qualifiers successfully, Lahore is all set to host the U19 Asian Rugby Championship Division Third competition starting today at the Punjab Stadium.

As many as four teams including India, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan besides hosts Pakistan will vie for honours in the event.

According to the organisers, teams from India and Afghanistan have already arrived for the competition while Uzbekistan were scheduled to reach Lahore late yesterday evening.

Pakistan will take on Afghanistan while India face Uzbekistan in the opening day’s matches, dubbed as the semi-finals. The final and the third position match have been scheduled for October 5.

Apart from three foreign teams, officials from Sri Lanka and Malaysia will also participate in the event. An organiser said this tournament is another step by the Punjab government to promote international sports and to revive the sports culture in the province.
