@Arzoo: "Police said the extortionists have been identified. Yes, please keep it a State Secret so the people can keep guessing and speculating about the extortionists’ ethnicity and their political affiliations. Nothing in this country is ever transparent; from the August 11, 1947 speech of the Quaid and murder of the first Prime Minister to the murder of Benazir Bhutto. The citizens of Pakistan are always kept in the dark about the truth." . When Maulana Edhi exposed Hameed Gul and IK being the persons who had threatened him, he took refuge in England for safety. In many other countries perpetrators would be considered criminals and treated as such. . If another baker of Lahore is beaten up tomorrow by someone's in-law, what happens? Zilch. Truth shall never come out. Your Arzoo will remain an Arzoo.
How about hanging few of the extortionist by the pole for few days. I know , lot of people will be upset with me for writing this kind of comment. So I am writing with all the due respect to their opinion .
Karachi is what happens to a city that has parties like MQM/ANP/PPP/JUI-F ruling it.
@MAK: In Pakistan, Zardari was more powerful than the Prime Minister and was known better than the Prime Minister even outside Pakistan.
@Humza,
You are right they "should", but what can the elected representatives of the city do, when the govt. (Sindh) does not even show an iota of concern with the City ?? Sindh govt has never in past been interested in running Karachi, like a metropolitan city, they want to run it on the lines of the Feudal society they have created in the interior Sindh. When the elected represntatives of the city were in power, noone heard the name extortion or target killing etc etc. I care for my city. I want the power of the city to be in the hands of elected representatives of the city, be they from MQM or PTI or even JI.
@Raj - USA: I live in Sharjah and asked a few Indians working in my company if they knew the name of the current President of India. To my surprise, no one knew his (Mr. Pranab Mukherjee) name but they did know that it's not a lady anymore. This happens in such countries where Prime Minister is more powerful than the president and the president is only a figure-head.
What is the name of ice cream parlour located in light house karachi ? its jeddah ice cream ?
@Zain: Why does this type of crime only go on in Karachi? The elected representatives of that city should work with the government to root out this type of extortion once and for all. It sounds a lot like the US in the 1930s when the Mafia would control parts of major American cities.
Now he will be spared from this extortion but others will pay as this will be jacked higher for the rest. There is need to brutally (as extortionists do) abolish this system without distinction, mercy and with iron hands. Fanaticism, favoritism and bribes are reducing this beautiful, capable country to ashes.
When I first read the headlines, my first thought was that this news is about Zardari's nephew. I am sure many would have also had the same thoughts initially. The point is that even today Zardari is the President of Pakistan in the minds of many. If you ask random persons on the streets of Pakistan to name the President of Pakistan, not even 10% would be able to name him. They may know that Zardari is no longer the President but would not know who is the President now.
Whatever happened to the targeted operation? Extortion still going on???
Poor Extortionist !! Wrong Address this time ..
