Additional Inspector General of Police Shahid Hayat has issued order to re-open the investigation into the murder of all the policemen, who took part in the 1992 and 1996 Karachi operations.
The decision was taken following the directives of the apex court on Thursday. “Investigation of all police martyrs cases registered during 1995 to 2010 and during 2013, disposed of as untraced are re-opened with immediate effect,” said a spokesperson of the Sindh Police.
“Additional IGP Karachi Shahid Hayat has ordered zonal DIGs to personally supervise the investigation of such cases and make efforts to trace and arrest the accused involved,” he further said.
DIGs have also been directed to furnish progress of the cases on a daily basis, till finalisation of investigation.
Nearly 150 policemen who took part in the 1992 and 1996 operations were killed one after another. The worst year in this context was 1996 when 57 policemen lost their lives.
In 2011, the police department had also submitted to the Supreme Court the details of these officers’ names, ranks, the places where they were killed and when, as well as the status of these cases.
“We have a complete record of these incidents,” said a DIG rank officer of Karachi while talking to The Express Tribune.
“Most of the cases have already ‘A Class’ and most of the investigating officers have already retired or died of natural deaths. However, the investigations will also be referred to other investigating officers.”

@Arzoo: The only reason they are perpetuating atrocities against us is because we are not the "Son of the Soil".
15000 people killed is not true..its a myth created ...and the fool followers will believe it..
Also I am waiting for margalla hills case, where hundreds of Urdu speaking people extra judically killed and buried there.
@Arzoo: True
@Arzoo: Supreme Court is ray of hope and I feel that it will give a tough time to PPP if they try play delaying tactics more on local elections.
Every one knows the culprits. In recent past, the May12 2007 incident is all fresh and live and recorded in TV footages. What more proofs Govts need? Why State is so helpless before powerful groups? Why NO ACTION?Wake up State and clean Karachi from All Mafias, Gangs and Political militant wings. Action time!
To kill someone is a cardinal sin so who ever kills anyone should be brought to justice. There should be strong judicial system with brave and honest judges to dispense cases within a specified period. Who killed those policemen and why they were killed should be investigated but what about extra judicial killings in the whole country? There is too much focus only on Karachi as if nothing is happening elsewhere in the country.
@Pakistani: Don't hold your breath. It is not likely to happen. Pakistanis are accustomed to asking for self-rule and right of self-determination for Kashmiris in India but do not want to give the same rights to the people in Karachi or in Balochistan. Just remember Awami League won the majority in elections in 1970 and the West Pakistanis did not want to give them their rights. So don't hold your breath. Bring in the people from rural Sindh and from other provinces to man the police and bureaucracies in Karachi but do not give the rights of self governance to the residents of Karachi.
It is very important to do this to that it never happens again in a civilized society !
IG - please pay attention to current law and order situation.
Wow..so who gave the list of all those policemen to the culprits?
I am waiting for Local body elections, after that I guess situation of Karachi will be improved as when locals of each area will get the authority and representation to improve the condition of their beloved city.
Excellent! Let the truth be on record how 150 policemen, who participated in 1992 and 1996 clean of Karachi, got killed. Until we all learn to respect law no one will be safe in Karachi or for that matter anywhere in the country. There are values we must learn as a nation or the fire that we are playing with will burn our own houses as well - no one will be safe as we all can see in case of Karachi.
Yes, please travel back in time and reopen all cases which involve ruthless killings of innocent people even if it means investigating QASBA and ALIGARH massacre or the PAKKA QILA carnage. If going back in time is the solution of all the woes confronting Karachi and then lets go down this path widen its scope.
The way forward is to empower Karachi and its people. Once there is indigenous policing there will be trust between police and people. So GET UP KARACHI demand for a powerful and independent local government with policing, transportation and utilities under it, lie it is done in all mega cities around the world.
We are waiting for the arrest & hanging of the policemen involved in extrajudicial murder of 15,000 innocent civilians on the streets of Karachi during '92 & '96 genocide.
We are waiting for the arrest of all the accused & co-conspirators in Mir Murtaza Bhutto (the true heir of ZA Bhutto)'s murder in 1996!
