DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two security guards of a local non-governmental organisation were injured in an exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen in Dary Colony, Paharpur tehsil on Tuesday.

An official of the Paharpur police station said the armed men entered a food distribution centre for South Waziristan’s internally displaced persons (IDPs) late night. The clash broke out when the guards opened fire at them. As a result, the guards identified as Behra Khan and Ghulam Qasim sustained injuries.

After hearing the gunshots, residents also came out of their houses and opened fire. Meanwhile, assailants escaped and snatched the weapons of the guards.

The injured guards were then rushed to the district headquarters and teaching hospitals where they were said to be out of danger. Paharpur police registered a case against the unidentified men.

The centre, run by the NGO Rural Development Organisation, distributes ration among IDPs living in the district. The displaced shifted to DI Khan following the military operation titled Rah-e-Nejat in the Mehsud area of South Waziristan in 2009.
