Chatara's Test-best figures of five for 61 proved the crucial difference despite an unbeaten 79 by Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq.
The two-match series finished tied at 1-1 after Pakistan won the first Test at the same venue by 221 runs.
Resuming at 158 for five, Pakistan suffered an early blow when Chatara trapped Adnan Akmal leg before wicket with only five runs added. Akmal, who made 20, went back to a ball which angled in towards his stumps.
Abdur Rehman scored 16 in a seventh wicket partnership of 34 with Misbah, who was content to continue to bat watchfully, as he had done on the fourth afternoon, before Rehman was caught behind off Tinashe Panyangara.
Chatara returned to the attack and immediately claimed the wicket of Saeed Ajmal in almost identical fashion to the way he dismissed Akmal, with the batsmen going back to a ball which cut back sharply and hit him on the pads.
Misbah faced 161 balls in reaching 58 at lunch. He stepped up the pace after the interval, keeping the strike with singles in the first two overs from Chatara and Brian Vitori, then taking 11 runs off an over from Chatara, including two boundaries. Two more fours came from Vitori's next over.
The second four off Vitori meant, however, that Junaid had to face the second new ball, which was taken with 26 runs needed. Chatara had Junaid caught at gully with the fourth delivery.
Last batsman Rahat Ali edged a single off the next delivery. Seeking to retain the strike, Misbah pushed the last ball of the over into the covers but sent Rahat back as Hamilton Masakadza swooped to pick up the ball. Rahat was unable to regain his crease and was run out comfortably, sparking exuberant celebrations by the Zimbabwe players.
It was only their fifth win against a major Test nation - their third against Pakistan - and their most significant victory since they beat India in 2000/01.

Wish I could've died before reading this NEWS.. Damn We lost to ZIMBABWE???
it is world best bowling sider of pakistan....Ha ha hah ahah ha ha ... wah world class bowling attack
Zimbabwe did not win becuse they were better. No, Pakistan lost because they played lousy cricket especially the likes of Hafeez, Azhar and Asad. Misbah has no fault in this; he surely cannot go and play for these sissies as well. Misbah should continue but let him choose his own side. Misbah is the only consistent player Pakistan has produced since Hanif, Miandad, Imran, Majid and Zaheer. Ramiz was very mediocre and should stick to commentary which he does better than he ever played cricket.
i am not shocked at all to learn that zimbabwe defeated Pakistan.....Cricket is a game anything can happen....Undoubtedly Zimbabwe played well at the end ....Greens need to learn from their mistakes....Some changes are urgently required both in bowling and batting department...They should come into the middle with some strong and alternative strategy.....I will not criticize my team...WIsh them best of luck for future.......Congrats Zimbabwe.
@asuf: Which is it? Hawai qilay or khyali pulao?
its very easy to get carried away after a loss against a smaller nation....remember one has to give credit where it is due....Zim played spirited cricket and got what they deserved....no need to start bashing and chopping the Pak team either... Cricket is a game and the good team on the day will win...that is simple....if chopping and changing could win matches then our hockey team might have been world champion many years ago...but what happened there..??? you can see with every defeat our hockey selectors completely chopped and changed the team and the result is that we are not in World cup now.... so even if changes in team are required they should be more centered on management and less on players... Its ok to drop players like Hafeez but what about Bowling coach Muhammad Akram...in his tutelage we have forgotten reverse swing...then what is Whatmore doing....losing ODI and test against lowest ranked team....time to take interest in this direction for board...before it gets too late... and for our beloved Indian Commentators...last time Zim won against a major nation in a test...do you remember that time it was at start of 2000s ...oh yes it was India which lost to Zim...so remember bad times can come to any team,,,....What is more India once lost an ODI against Kenya as well.just like Pak lost to Bangladesh here and there.....so bad things happen anytime...
Muhammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq should be immediately dropped from test squad. We have 3 Umers (Umer Amin, Taufiq Umer and Umer Akmal) who can easily replace them
ET Is it a historic win or the historic loss?Last time I checked I was still in Pakistan and ET was a pakistani newspaper
@Vishnu Dutta: That too with India's Team 'C'!. Even with so many great phaast bowlers Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe!. Good going Pak!
The Blackest day of Pakistan Cricket. Please immediately sack Misbah from the Captaincy. Hafeez is playing dirty politics in the team management. Please do not select the average performers against this weak team of Zimbabwe. Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq must be dropped for forthcoming tours of South Africa and Sri Lanka. Faisal Iqbal, Umar Amin and some experienced and old players must be given chance. PCB must avoid to follow the advise of Wasim Akram who needs two test series against India in India. PCB must also avoid to play in tri-series match against India, Sri Lanka in India. First of all PCB must restructure team then must participate in next t20 and world cup also.
Its so sad to see Pak Cricket stooped to this low. I am not sure how all the Pak legends can digest the current state of Pak cricket. Something need to be done to identify the best and able new breed of cricketers. A country which produced greats like Salim malik and Akram will still have best talent that only can be identified by the same legends, not by any bureaucrat or a journalist. Zim is like a club team and not a professional outfit. Proof is an Indian B team won all gameswithout any hiccup recently.
As the "enlightened titans" of the Difaa-e-Pakistan and other "experts" like Zaid Hameed would say, this nothing more than a CONSPIRACY by the CIA-RAW-Mossad combined, aided and abetted by misguided "local elements" -- really, Pakistan needs to sort out its internal and external problems as well -- even in its cricket!!
Gross overestimation of talent of current team just wonder if it could win against rest of the players. it is a good bet rest of the players will spank this eleven.Pacers were very ordinary not much pace without any swing . looks scouting by Zimbabwe was excellent they exactly knew how Hafeez plays. Loosing is one thing but playing so poorly against a minor league team is very disappointing. Selectors should bear more than equal responsibility. Looks they closed mind and donot like certain players.certain others are always there despite recurrent poor performance .
pakistani's are the one that provide fun and comedy to world cricket...
vishnu dutta India have lost more matches to Pakistan so just Shut up
what Australia have done with india at india soil beat you 4-0 in test matches i bet that if india were here or anyt team india is not a good team they just have normal batting and bowling is poor very poor zimbabwe are way better them
you give 1million dollar to Zimbabwe coz they are poorest country in world and you can buy everything from Money like IPL scandals and other Scandals grooming in India and ipl
Wolves are landed on India soil they will barked hard and every team will feeling fear from Wolves of Pakistan.
@asuf: Thodi jeetein apni khud ki tema ko bhi gift kar dein.
Yes Zimbabwe cricket is now going forward they are most solid now they have played so many games we can't frustrated from that because they are good side 264 is a difficult task on 5th day pitch thats what Test match is called in which all your physical and mental strength will judge who feel more pressure while chasing he will lose, if you look at test matches history there are few win on the score of 250+ otherwise every team even it is Australia England or south Africa they struggle to get 250+ in test match
All i say congrats to Zimbabwe they deserve that and i hope they will do better in future they have now good batting line up Malcolm waller, tendai Chatara and Payangara impressed me so much he will a star for Zimbabwe in future.
It is ironic that many in Pakistan want to kick their only dependable batsman out of the team. Without Misbah they would have not just been defeated but humiliated. Even though some are consistently failing but they are always included in the eleven of all types of cricket. Another fact that most ignore is there are no new players with the real skills, determination and guts. No matter who the captain or selectors are there are only a few names to select from and the officials cannot come out in the ground and play. Where do we see a new Hanif, Miandad, Inzi, MY, or a new Zaheer waiting in the wings? You cannot make a basketball team while choosing from pigmies.
Zim played well, pakistan need to improve its on ground stretegy. Misbah is a good player but his stretegy was not very successful
@toheed anwar: India just beat Zimbabwe 5-0. That is 100% success rate. So was in CT 13. Dont compare yourself with top teams.
First Ireland and now Zimbabwe. Fixing anyone?
Congratulations Zimbabwe Team! Well Done.
Why to expect teams like Australia, India, Pakistan, etc to be all time winners, after all Zimbabwe is a senior team too, and its their due right to prove to be excellent.
Once, Sri Lanka was considered to be weak side, and it changed all perception by winning world cup.
Very very happy for Zimbabwe. LOL
seriously
Inshallah Failsabad Wolves will win the Champions Trophy.............wait .........this Test was fixed and so is Champions Trophy. Pakistanis should concentrate Narendra Modi bashing instead.
well played Zimbawe, you really deserved for this great achievement!
Well played Zimbabwe but I want to raise a point here that You all can blame Pakistani batting for this loss as usual but please also look at your so called world class bowling which you always boast about, 264 can never be a easy target for any team on any surface in 4th inning.
Don't worry guys. It is just a gift by the PCB to Zimbabwe cricket board for them to tour Pakistan. This is a deal, we can't lost to Zimbabwe.
time to drop Hafeez, Misbah Shafiq and Ajmal. Find 2 good openers and groom a new spinner.
@asuf: not make fool of yourself...........lol
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahzhzhzhzhzhahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Well done Zimbabwe. Time to replace three top order batsman. Also the PCB needs to train the players on how to behave on the field. This is cricket on a world stage not some gilli danda game. They need to keep their childish antics and responses under control. The wicket leeper and two other players need to keep their banter to a minimum.
Plz change the captain, bring some fresh captain, kick out Hafeez. We have Umar Amin, Umar Akmal, Haris Sohail and we badly need new ideas and better strategies.
insaallah pakistan will come hard . this was reward from pakistan to promote game in zimbambe. we could easily win match but we wanted to give zimbambe a hope of revival by sacrificing our victory.
Lost to zim
We should kick out the selection committee and team management first. Persisting with sub-standard players like Hafeez, our best batsman Umar Akmal hasn't played any test cricket since 2011, since Misbah wants to see him as a wicketkeeper. Please change the captain.
This 1-1 result is unfair for Zimbabwe They have dominated 8 out of 10 days in this series
Well played Zimbabwe. I am actually glad we lost. Time for the mediocre and highly over-rated Hafeez to go. Well played Misbah, too but you wonder what Hafeez needs to do to get dropped? Until this innings, Saeed Ajmal had scored more runs than him in this year!! I will blame consistent lack of contribution from the opener as the main reason for this defeat.
...looks like Hafeez has his eyes on test captaincy...
I can't believe this!
Zim played really good cricket!
LOL. Can't even beat Zimbabwe now. The steep decline of Pakistani cricket would be alarming were I not Indian and totally loving the schadenfreude :-)
congratulation Pakistan!!!
Pakistan is nothing without Misbah.
