KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) sector incharge and former MPA Nadeem Hashmi was sent on a 7-day physical remand by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), Express News reported on Thursday.

Hashmi was arrested for allegedly firing at a police mobile and killing two police personnel Muhammad Ali and Arif in Hyderi.

The Hyderi police arrested Hashmi on charges of terrorism and murder in a raid on his house in North Nazimabad on Tuesday night.

Parts of Karachi were shut down – and buses stopped running, vehicles were torched and ‘unidentified’ people forced shops to close down after his arrest.

The former MPA was taken to court in an armoured personnel vehicle (APV). Hashmi was held inside the APV briefly in wait for ATC Judge Khalida before being ushered in under heavy security.

The MQM sector incharge seemed to be unharmed and other MQM members were also present, including Muhammad Hussain.

The exact charges and names of accomplices – if any – will be made clearer during the hearing for remand. Under ATC rules, the police will request a 14-day remand in order to investigate and prepare their case for the next hearing.

Whether any other MQM personnel have been implicated will become clearer after this court proceeding.

Earlier MQM’s Faisal Sabzwari expressed the party's concern over being targeted. Sabzwari claimed instead of arresting criminals, the Rangers were targeting innocent members of the party.

The raid on Tuesday night also resulted in the arrest of several other MQM workers.
