KARACHI: A delegation of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), comprising Prof. S Tipu Sultan and Prof. M Idrees Adhi, met Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shahid Nadeem Baloch on Wednesday at the Central Police Office.

The delegation discussed the issues of lawlessness, insecurity, target killings, kidnapping and extortion by criminal groups in the city and the province. Senior members of the medical association, Dr Mirza Ali Azhar and Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad, were also present on this occasion. The IG was assisted by senior police officials, including Dr Sanaullah Abbasi, Naveed Khuwaja and Sultan Ali Khuwaja.

Baloch was told that nobody in the province felt safe.  “There is no security of the life and property of the general public.” The extortionists and target killers are operating with free will. The delegation also informed the IG about the increasing target killings and kidnapping of doctors.

Baloch listened to the complaints of the doctors and accepted that these problems were very much prevalent in the society. He also told the delegation that the police department had been facing a shortage of officials to overcome these crimes. He appointed a focal person from his department to address the complaints of the doctors and act accordingly.

The IG said that police was going to acquire the latest equipment to deal with cyber crime. He also agreed to the demand of the doctors for the provision of arm licences for their self defence on a priority basis.

The PMA delegation demanded early and safe recovery of the recently kidnapped doctors from Khairpur. A focal person of the PMA will act as a liaison officer with the police department.
