KARACHI: The arrest of former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Nadeem Hashmi led to scenes of violence and wide-scale closure of the city on Wednesday.
Earlier this morning, Hashmi was arrested during a raid carried out by the Karachi police at his residence. Other MQM workers were also arrested. A murder case was registered against the former MPA at the Hyderi police station.
The MQM coordination committee condemned the act and termed it a conspiracy against the party. The party's parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, Khawaja Izharul Hasan, said the Karachi police was acting against the framework provided by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar.
MQM chief Altaf Hussain questioned the legitimacy of the arrest. Regretting that an MQM unit-in-charge was arrested for every tiny misdeed in the area, Hussain demanded the provincial government provide the legal grounds for Hashmi's arrest.
As activities in the city came to a halt, businesses, petrol pumps and shops remained closed for most of the day, while the All Private School Management Association (APSMA) announced a closure of all private schools. Three vehicles were torched by unknown men at Naagan Chowrangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Korangi.
As the day progressed, Rangers and police continued raiding various parts of the city and taking suspects under custody. Raids occurred from DHA and Lyari to Liaquatabad, Orangi Town, Buffer Zone and North Karachi.
Security forces also raided and surrounded the house of defunct Peoples Amn Committee (PAC) leader Uzair Jan Baloch in Lyari.

@Raheel Abid: Your vote is conditional.It means you can vote taliban as well if they perform without changing their nature.PTI and taliban are performing nowadays.By the way what kind of performance u r looking for?
@tariq: I know the value of vote that is why I don't vote only one party BLINDLY. like u do. If they show performance I will vote for them, I seems as if I am talking to some rural chacha who supports wadeeras even if they make him die of thirst. U labeled me as PTI supporter in your previous email. I am not. Did you forget that? Anyways, to you your path and to me mine. Good day.
@holwer: Now it's your turn to make yourself correct.We hold 85% mendate of karachi.You are in minority.Comments from 15% does not make any difference.Don't cry baby.Every new day brings more love and support for MQM.hahahahaha
@tariq: You can keep your suggestion to your self and you grow up first. I saw MQM in Mustafa kamal time. They cleared encroachments. I saw 4 bridges being built simultaneously. I voted for them. But for past 3-4 years MQM is just playing games. U go ahead with your blind support. I don't like to be blinded any more. And I will support any party I like.
Don't label me if you don't know me.
@tariq: Correction. MQM is the most fearsome and criticized party of Pakistan. :-)
MQM is not political party it is the group of terrorist. It demanded for Army operation to show the people failure of Sindh Govt. MQM remained with present Govt for 5 years as coalition partner and enjoyed all sent lot of to Hypocratic face (Altaf) murder of Dr Imran Farooq. Now operation started against criminals, bhuta groups and terrorist it starts crying. It is his tactics kill and cry. Every one knows MQM started bhuta khori, street crime and mobile snatching in Karachi. Its politics base on to create panic. Now its parties criminals are being sent behind the bar thats why crying. Chill baby chill .Hope chief terrorist will go soon behind the bar.
@just_someone: MQM is the only terrorist outfit in Pakistan.Is this you want to listen? What about others?
@Aysha M: rural oppression?
I am surprised that people can't see a clear plot against a party. It all started when MQM asked for a militiary action. The government agency and officials submitted a report to the Supreme Court highlighting an unknown Mohajir Republic Army. It was such a stupid report that the minister and government had to withdraw the report immediately. It is heinous that no report or operation targets the openly occupied Superhighway (you can't travel after 7 pm), Manghopir (full of militants, no marble factory owner can go there, they had to subcontract to people of specific origins at almost no profit rate, even then no work after 2 pm), Layari (no one media or party can enter there, full of gangsters, the main source of bhattha parchi to buseinessmen in the city). Now all police officials are being replaced with mostly othose from other provinces. Does this happen in other two provinces?
@ Exx.MQM: and now your bike was burnt yesterday by MQM. Your statements look rather suspicious. Some people seem to be blindly opposing MQM on each issue whether right or wrong. Although I do not support MQM at least the reason for yesterday's strike. It was not such a serious matter to take such extreme action to paralyse the life of the city and put the karachiites in problems majority of whom are their own voters. Sometime MQM people's actions look like childish. They should have called for strike for share of urban sindh in government, powers to local government system, jobs of urdu speakings in government department particularly in rangers, police and other department. But on serious issues they do not talk and call for strike.
@Omair Khan: What conclusion? MY bike was burnt yesterday by MQM thugs. Who is going to pay for that? YOU!
All those people who regret voting for MQM now, like X-MQM and ex MQM are not even the real voters because if they were, they shouldn't have said that without waiting for conclusion still knowing the Police statement that they arrested that MPA just because they got orders from the top so everybody knows it's the work of Sindh govt so whoever thinks if he's the criminal then provide proof and if he had killed those policemen then he wouldn't be resting at his home same night, use your brain people.
@Xnain: Karachi saw it's peak in Musharraf era too when Mustafa Kamal was the Mayor, so you don't need to go in 60's my friend.
@Raj - USA: Thanks for your suggestion ET, pls consider this, I for one have been a target for trolling, ET is a leading paper, trolling should not be entertained in any form. This is my third ID and that is also used from time to time, like yesterday
People of Karachi Love MQM.
The writ of govt. should be established ..............
@Shamim. Nothing amazing in that because all target killers and criminals already fled to different of Pakistan and other countries and once operation will be over they all will be back..
Target criminals and MQM will scream out
"Everybody is terrorist and a militant except us", MQM motto. Political parties in Karachi are a headache.
ET: Please install a software to check on impersonators and fake recommendations by checking the IP addresses. It should not be that much difficult. Scan all comments through this software before publishing.
MQM leadership has no control what so ever over its workers. While they accepted the operation, there workers have simply thrown aside the leaderships position and taken things into their hands. Leadership ofcourse then has to give face to their workers revolt else it would loose any control left.
now any terrorists belonging to political parties are innocent just because they have affiliations.
This is PPP biased operation. The LEAs are still trying to find the gangster in Lyari, they should chk Bilawal House rather houses.
I just to defy an MQM striike.. Went to Office came back. Also no one was absent. Had a great day Alhamdulillah
great coverage TRIBUNE !! hats off to you people..
@ashar: we are on the same side, Karachi's demand for a powerful effective city government brings all of us together
Whatever the case, we must stop taking law in our hands. That is not the right way to deal with issues. All parties must abolish this for the safety of citizens.
@Pakistani: If anything I have more faith that peace and order will be restored to Karachi after this arrest. :Let's face it, Karachi is suffering a law and order problem so it's high time that these necessary actions are taken. Good decision by ther authorities.
it seem we are heading towards another episode of 1971...the abusive language being used during raid which was done against bengal..how Uzair jan left the country despite court issued non-bailable warrant.....
Pakistani rulers are going to destroy their own coutry and all the pronovinces also.
@ashar: whole day media is covering/playing MQM drama.. still u think so?
@Aysha M:
Although I am not on your side always, but the recommendations on Azher's comments seems fabricated like 9/11 by the US. Something is there at the moderator level in ET that I have now started to believe, biased or may be controlled.
@Muzafar: So what as an individual will you do. Sit home and be a keyboard warrior.
@Pakistani: Who gives a crap what his reputation is in his constituency, if he is suspected for illegal activities and murder then he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent, this is the only way to clean up Karachi, arrest and prosecute.
One could see and guess who are the people which has been involved in murders, blackmailing, terrorist activities, kidnapping and torture for decades and when the clean up of Karachi begins, they are the first ones to protest because some of their thugs are going to be arrested. I say a law abiding citizen should have been shocked to see one of their leader is arrested for murder, and they should support the clean up but NO, they themselves are involved and try to impose their will on the nation, they are not the only ones living in Karachi. Time has come to clean up this city regardless who they are and which party they belong to, this action should be taken in the interest of the nation. We know who said that inception of Pakistan was a mistake and this person visits India while flying over Pakistan but never stops to see his people in Pakistan, although he is being supported financially through what ever means to sustain his lavish living in London.
@kanwal: agreed! but let them finish 'urban taliban' first..
stop criticizing MQM.. some 'namaloom afraad' doing all this.. what a shame!! how MQM is now crying wake up call for karachites.. what they did when they were in power along side PPP.. they really no less than 'urban feudalist'
No matter how much i dislike MQM, this point raised by Mr Rizvi is true actually: no rangers or police will ever dare to set foot in the strongholds of taliban in karachi. So the point of this operation is very biased.
Why I only see Aysha M here when some other comments have been censored? Are you only allowing Aysha M post comments here? Why not the other side?
The only good decision by PMLn government.
MQM has shown its true colors by bringing life in Karachi to a stand still. What is the big deal, its former MPA is arrested? Nadeem Hashmi was arrested in connection to the murder of 2 policemen in Nazimabad on late Tuesday night on charges of attempted murder, weapon seizing and terrorism. Law enforcement agencies would have nabbed him on account of solid clues. MQM should not make the port city hostage.
And their supporters say they are not militant!
Being blind to reality is a trait us Pakistanis have an abundance of.
Based on previous news pieces. The real culprits have already left the country, than what is govt going to do with these small thugs....
Once the operation subsides it will be back to normal (i.e. killing and bhatta). By the way, it is also well known that the killers do their job while inside prison, enjoying 6-star services.
and i thought PTI's dharnas were bad... this is criminal... pulling the plug on Karachi anytime MQM feels like it... let law enforcers do their job... if any pol party has issues then go to the courts!
he will be released in a week. all captured during Yousaf Plaza raid 3 days ago have gone scott free already
Do the Operation In Lyari , where all the problem is.
@Nazimabadi: MQM has support here but it is usually out of fear Please qualify this statement with evidence, do you think people in the vicinity of 90k could be coerced to vote for MQM. What fear are you talking about?
@Aysha M: 'When injustice becomes law then resistance becomes duty.' Tyre-burners, road-blockers.....viva la resistance, more power to them. Private property- burners, cop-killers....shoot them in the head.
is it really a picture of Karachi in frame? i doubt that.
There is no conspiracy here. It is their sins catching up to them.
I live in Block H, North Nazimabad near the place from where this guy was picked up. MQM has support here but it is usually out of fear. Educated people mostly do not support MQM in private.
The unit office at Nagina - adjacent to hyderi market also has a bad reputation. MQM in trying to keep a stranglehold over the city has made it a difficult place to live in. Businesses are shifting and other cities are benefitting...all these guys are good at are now using the victim/sazish/conspiracy card and burning few cars shooting certain ppl etc.
How about arresting Zulfiqar Mirza who openly admitted to distributing weapons which were not meant for use at wedding celebrations
kounsa Pakistan, if we don't have say in Pakistan than we won't say Pakistan
@Aysha M: You said what you wanted to say. Now your punch lines won't do you any good.
@Khan: couldnt be said any better When injustice becomes law then resistance becomes duty.
so GET UP KARACHI
@Azhar: Oh my God. You got 242 Likes!!!…..I like to call it ‘Likes’ instead of recommendations.
venom goes viral
@Blunt: Stop criticizing MQM. They made this city. It is their right to also burn it down. Typical urban feudalism and ‘jagerdari’ at its worst. Sorry not MQM, but people of Karachi and their sacrifices and taxes has made this city and it’s no ones’ right to burn it down. BTW it’s high time you write yourself ‘Ayesha (MQ)M’
@afza: “stop criticizing MQM. They made this city. It is their right to also burn it down” @ ayeshaM .i seriously doubt your sanity now .
this is courtesy of a fake Aysha M, who thinks he and she can contribute more with a fake idea than his or her own. Its ok, most people can make the difference
@sick of this nonsense: @ayesha m your are the worst advocate of MQM. Are you actually supporting it or purposefully giving it a bad name? saying it has a right to burn down a city shows your immaturity.
this is courtesy of a fake Aysha M, who thinks he and she can contribute more with a fake idea than his or her own. Its ok, most people can make the difference
GET UP KARACHI Qaim Ali Shah, the only captain who didnt get axed after appaling performance of 5 years and got to keep the job. Cold calculated callousness of the provincial and federal governments have brought Karchi to this point, they can no longer deny the people of Karachi their right of a city governement. Karachi will not take it anymore. You cannot talk Karachi without Karachi, and everybody knows who is Karachi for the last 3 decades. so GET UP KARACHI
When injustice becomes law then resistance becomes duty.
I hope its the start of an end.
Why they don't Talk (dialogue). They can dialogue with Taliban and other Group. What is stopping them? Why the Double Game ? why the Topi Drama?
----------------- ---------------------- ---------------------
@Aysha M Stop criticizing MQM. They made this city. It is their right to also burn it down.
Interesting, moderators.
GET UP KARACHI And resolve to unlearn to live with oppression of the rural representatives. And demand urban leadership for Karachi, a powerful, independent, effective city government with policing, transport and utilities under it, whoever, whichever party gets elected it has to be from Karachi, for Karachi and about Karachi.
Karachi faces a threat which is unfolding on a daily basis, the enemy is within and winning: feudal mindset. The way they have arrested growth and development of poor and innocent harees, this is what they want to do to the people of Karachi, so GET UP KARACHI rise above party lines
@Waleed: venom goes viral
Leaving aside Orangi, kati pahari, Al-asif, Lyari, the coward police went to nazimabad to arrest a former MPA. Pathetic nation!!!
mqm being a democratic party should protest democratically. resorting to violence only brings its own name to disrepute. @ayesha m your are the worst advocate of MQM. Are you actually supporting it or purposefully giving it a bad name? saying it has a right to burn down a city shows your immaturity.
@the Skunk:
Spot on...talk is always cheap if from afar, whether it be Dubai or London.
@Lahori: :D
@Aysha M: Your last comments was a good tactics it made the opponent to display their nature.hahahaha. Let the opponent know that we love Karachi more than they do.
@Aysha M: So we totally shut our office today in solidarity with the MQM MNA who was arrested. Totally deprived our daily workers of their salaries because we believe in MQMs frequent calls for strikes. It has nothing to do with the call we received that said we needed to shut our office or have it vandalized. It naturally was someone pretending to be from the MQM. Update from SITE.
@Aysha M:
Thats shows how sincere they are with Pakistan and specially with Karachi, sooner or later terrorists willl cry
the LEA' and intelligence are biased..how can a operation be fair.....we want UNO forces to conduct operation in karachi..Sindh C.M. represent only one section of population which has been proved recently when he recommended Sharook name for pardon..
@Aysha M: Rather they are "destroying" this city. Karachi saw its peak in 60s when there was no MQM. Where karachi stands now, owes a lot to MQM.
MQM;LET THE LAW TAKE ITS COURSE.You will be genuinly popular if you give up the criminal actvities. You have done it in the past and you have a lot of potential . Serve Karachi sincerely , otherwise they are not going to vote for you anymore..
"stop criticizing MQM. They made this city. It is their right to also burn it down" @ ayeshaM .i seriously doubt your sanity now .
@Pakistani: Then probably you should leave Karachi and go somewhere else.....period
@Aysha M: Rural representatives are respresenting 80% of Sindh. Get a life, a GK and an IQ test....
@Aysha M: Stop criticizing MQM. They made this city. It is their right to also burn it down. Typical urban feudalism and 'jagerdari' at its worst. Sorry not MQM, but people of Karachi and their sacrifices and taxes has made this city and it's no ones' right to burn it down. BTW it's high time you write yourself 'Ayesha (MQ)M'
Let me get this straight.... MQM is all okay with an operation cleanup as long as none of their members are targeted?
It’s no rocket science to figure out that MQM has The Power to bring life to stand still in the Karachi city within a few hours, whenever they feel under pressure. And this is how they react, by shutting down shops, threatening shop keepers and local traders, who survive on daily wages, burning tyres and blocking roads, this is MQM’s way of exhibiting “Peaceful Protest” and then they expect people to love them back! Now we’ll hear from MQM apologists like Uza Syed and Ayesha M justifying their actions and try to twist the conversation.
@X-MQM: Too little too late buddy.
@Pakistani: Shut up. Let the forces do their job
thats how they their POWER......!!!!
I am ashmed today I voted a criminal
Well done police.. Operation with zero mercy... Kill the killers.
@Lahori: Good. Now your cities will boom and people will migrate to Lahore and Islamabad and set up political fiefdoms over there. Do not forget to take membership. Salams
@Imdad Ali Shah-Dubai: Talking from Dubai is easy because you do not find fault with the Arab sheikhs. Come to Karachi and start working and living here rather than working and living for the UAE. Salams
@shery: Altaf bahi's message for karachites..lol..hope everyone stay safe!!
Hello. So what's all the fuss about? Why can't an MQM worker be arrested? Is this not terrorism when you can shut the entire city down in half an hour?
Well it shows who is actually behind all this standstill and bla bla...
ET also posting comments very cautiously.......
good move. No one is above the law. Police and law enforcement agencies should have right to arrest the criminals irrespectives of their affiliation and position. Please stop crying
I will not be fooled this time. I will not vote for MQM anymore. It is sad to see that the people I trusted are now behind bars.
I think we shouldn't jump on any conclusion as it is just an arrest and not declared guilty. One thing i don't get is that "anything" happens to MQM the whole city is set on fire, buses and coaches burnt, roads blocked, straight firing. Why is MQM so violent?
@Ayesha M: Get up Karachi and burn the whole city down, right? Why don't you guys use any other medium to raise your voice rather than putting the whole city on stand still?
We should support the law and order agencies to bring peace in Karachi and crush anti state ,terrorist and so called Republican army.
@Blunt: Very rightly said. They are happy to have army against rivals only. As if they have descended from the heaven.
@Aysha M: You only called for the rerun. we want army..... we want army.... we want army....
Another day for the people of Karachi to take rest at home who work seven days in a week.
I have lost hope in Karachi after this MPA arrest. Release this person ASAP.
How can a city come to a stand still just because of one person?
@Pakistani
You seemed to have asked many questions - please enlighten us with the answers also - tell us what his reputation is in his constituency - btw tell me if you know any other MNA who has used firearms against a police mobile and killed two policemen
When will the liyari criminal dons be arrested for whom the highest of country's courts issued orders several times??
Violence is not the answer. Your ex MPA may have been picked up, but setting coaches and rickshaws is not the right mode of protest.
Heard that rangers are all over nazimabad area where MPA was arrested - finally a sign of relief for karachiites. Rangers should also open up the closed shops and give more security to educational institutions on times like these to give confidence to people and let their childern go to schools - and fail MQM or any other party's attempt to shut down the city as if it is their personal property. Rangers should continue their efforts with full swing - time to rid karachi from all its nuisances
Wah MQM wah!!! Way to lodge a protest by burning your own home.
Aaaaahhh....... the namaloom afraad !
Commend bravery of the police. More action needed. The way the MQM have forcefully imposed a shut down on the city shows their insecurity. They know the common Karachiite doesnt care the least about the arrest of their workers but they want to show otherwise to the world.
Good Morning Karachi.......dont wake up, its Strike today!!
Those who demanded operation first, can't even stand Police. But they're fine with army operation as long as it's against their rivals.
why government is arresting mqm worker and why they putting case on them which they haven't done cheif justice of Pakistan must take action against this ......geo or jeno do............
Now who are those "NA MALOOM AFRAAD"?
Same CJP who you didn't allow to visit this city few years back. The irony is unmistakable. Mr. NS must realize that its your will and governance that is going to bring peace and not the wishful support you are looking in APCs from such mafias.
Finally operation showed some signs of credibility and impartiality!
If they really wanna arrest a former MPA for actual criminal activity then why not the one who distributed 300,000 heavy weapon licenses? Those licenses have been used to "legalize" over 1 million automatic guns being used in target killing and extortion all over the city. They were not intended "to be used at weddings"
If he is not the guilty, will surely b out.... bt that doesn't mean u shut down the whole Khi city..:(
Well done, arrest these terrorists without any discrimination and pressure.
Whenever MQM people are nabbed its always a conspiracy and when any other party people are arrested MQM term that as militants.. so isn't this a conspiracy by MQM itself??
"Karachi police is acting totally acting against the frame work provided ......"
Grammar mistake dear ET. Thanks
@Azher: Unexplained venom
GET UP KARACHI against rerun of the 90s, rise against oppression of rural representatives.
Very cautious statements are being issued from London. It seems that London Police has not yet given up.................
Repetition of the word 'acting' at the end of line 5.
Finally, some real action. While the Sindh Govt. is busy asking for Jatoi's pardon, Karachi is burning. Unfortunately, no change seems to be visible on the horizon except after another 5 years. Sindh must vote out these criminals.
Wow! Arrest! I remember they arrested Shahzeb's murderers as well. . .
Brave decision of competent authorities for implement and improve law & order situation at Karachi. Its time to come out blackmailing of political party. After a long time one day has been passed without killing in karachi to prove if Govt take correct decision then must be come fruitful result. Don't hesitate to take big step if Govt is sincere to improve law & order situation.
one of the best decision police ever taken
So all the liyari, Orangi and Mangophir with the list goes on, are still at large and they are nabbing innocent people with target killer sticker's sticking on them. Wah Rangers and Police!
karachites will have a sigh of relief when they are able to express themselves freely without harassment from any quarter and that will be the day of reckoning
