RAWALPINDI:

A stolen car has been recovered from a police constable who is serving as the driver for the Sargodha Police Legal DSP. The car — a Suzuki Mehran bearing registration number RIA-2601and owned by Shamroz Khan — was stolen from Mubarak Lane, Rawalpindi, allegedly by Sheikh Ashfaq Ahmed, against whom an FIR has already been registered in the Saddar Baironi Police Station.

ASI Ahmad Nawaz, who recovered the car, said that after being lifted, the car was first sold to Tajamul Shah, who later transferred it to Constable Muhammad Naseer after forging ownership documents for the car. It is believed that Naseer was aware that the car was stolen, but still went ahead and procured it.

The vehicle’s actual owner, Khan, told The Express Tribune that he had lodged a complaint with Saddar Circle SP Waheedur Rehman Khattak after his car was stolen, but the police refused to register an FIR. According to police officials, the SP tasked DSP Muhammad Ijaz Malik with recovering the vehicle. After ‘finding’ the car, the police did not file an FIR against the accused and simply gave Naseer temporary custody after altering the investigation report.

When contacted, ASI Nawaz said he had given the car to Naseer on the order of DSP Malik. “They are my seniors and I did what they ordered me to do,” he said.

Saddar Baironi SHO Sadaqat Khan claimed he was unaware of the incident, admitting that he was in the dark about what his juniors were up to.

DSP Malik, when contacted, said, “Why have you called me? Write whatever you want,” and disconnected the phone.
