Sushmita Bannerjee, 43, was killed outside her home in Paktika province.
The BBC report cites Ms Banerjee as working as a health worker in the province while filming the lives of local women as part of her work.
Police claimed that Taliban militants arrived at her home in the provincial capital, Kharana, tied up her husband and other members of the family, took Banerjee out and shot her.
They dumped her body near a religious school, police added.
No group has claimed the attack as yet.
Banerjee had moved to Afghanistan in 1989 after marrying Afghan businessman Jaanbaz Khan.
In her book 'A Kabuliwala's Bengali Wife', she narrates the story of her life in Afghanistan and her escape following the Taliban crackdown in 1993.
Her book was made into a Bollywood film 'Escape from Taliban' in 2003.

Allah bless her and guide her killers to the right path! Ameen!
@np: dear I know she was married to Afghan person but she knew there is threat to her life in Afghanistan, so it would have been better if she had stayed in India with her husband. Now she is dead but we must respect her for her bravery.
THERE is price that needs to be paid for standing for what is just.salute to you for standing with your faith and love.TALIBAN killed you because they feared the work you were doing in province for women and girls would THWART there medieval idea.
INDIA will not deter by this coward acts and taliban must fear the day when every afghan girl becomes malala and by god's grace when MODI becomes the PM the indian blood shall be avenged.
RIP MAM

ET PLEASE PUBLISH.
Killing defenseless women, shooting defenseless girls.............ultimate cowardice if anything.
As per Indian news papers, Taliban wanted that she convert to Islam, which she resisted. It was a love marriage in which she wanted to remain Hindu. What a tragic end to a beautiful real life story. I am sure there must be more to this which we don't know.
Well she was pushing her luck by making some choices that could have been easily avoided without undermining the larger goal (There's a lot that a private individuals can do in healthcare & women's issues in India itself without any risk of being gunned down). Anyway it was her life, so her choices, perhaps she fell in love with Afghanistan. humans are indeed irrational players.
RIP lady, you lived an eventful life.
@Prashant Kohale: @Fiz:
She has married an Afghan and lives in Afghanistan with her husband.
feel sorry for her loved ones. Its something all the stakeholders, especially india should get ready to face in post 2014 afghanistan.
Was it a wise decision to go back and live in Afghanistan. However, that signifies that she was a brave woman. At least taliban cannot snatch that credit from her.
Although a sad news but it proves that you can't escape from them as long as you are "there". To escape, you must stay away from them.
Really sorry for her but it was her mistake that she went back to Afghanistan, however she was brave and may god bless her soul. Hope both Indian and Pakistani brothers and sister will unite and fight the terrorism together.
So she could not escape the Taliban.
