KARACHI: The government will continue with last year’s policy for admissions to medical universities in Sindh, it was decided at a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at CM House on Thursday.
They discussed admissions to DOW University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) in Jamshoro, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBU), Larkana and Peoples Medical College (PMC) in Nawabshah and approved the admission policy for the year 2010-11.
Forty-five students from all districts of Sindh, except Karachi, will be admitted to DOW University. Out of these, 30 students will be selected from rural areas and 15 from urban areas. It was decided that 20 students from Karachi will get admissions in other institutions of the province. Ten will be admitted to Liaquat Medical University while 10 female students will be admitted to Peoples Medical College.
“These admissions will be based on merit and choice,” Special Secretary Health Dr Captain Majid told The Express Tribune.
This is for those students who have already been selected on the basis of merit in medical universities and colleges and want to transfer to other universities such as DOW and Peoples Medical College.
The chief minister also directed the Sindh health secretary to immediately appoint required specialist doctors to Government Hospital Sukkur. He also ordered that five buses must be provided to LUMHS, a commitment he had made to the university earlier.
When the discussion turned to increasing the stipend of postgraduate house job doctors in Sindh, Shah said that the stipend would be raised to match the amount paid by the Punjab government.
The meeting was attended by DOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Masood Hasan Khan, LUMHS Vice-Chancellor Professor Naushad Ahmed Shaikh, SMBBU Vice-Chancellor Sharif Baloch, PMC Principal Professor Azam Yousifani and the Sindh health secretary.
