ISLAMABAD:

A number of students, civic-minded residents and police officials participated in a walk to show their commitment to improving road safety in the federal capital on Saturday.

The walk was organised by the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) in collaboration with partners. The participants, including students from Roots and the Angelique schools, walked around two kilometres from the China Chowk on Jinnah Avenue to Express Chowk. They held placards with slogans advising people not to use cell phones while driving and to abide by traffic signals.

Chief guest Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police (Operations) Sultan Azam Temuri, who is also the media manager for the capital’s police departments, said the ITP is committed to ensuring safer road in the city. “An exemplary traffic system with a zero rate of road accidents can be accomplished in the city with the cooperation of road users,” Temuri said. “We’re trying to raise awareness about traffic rules among people and requesting them to become more law-abiding.”

AIG Temuri said organising road safety awareness walks helps pass on the message to the younger generation of future drivers. “The basic objective is to inculcate traffic sense among all segments of society,” he added. He also stated that, “The Islamabad Police is committed towards initiating community policing to bridge the police-public gap.”

Traffic SSP Dr Moeen Masood, Traffic SP Asmatullah Junejo and other traffic police officials represented the ITP at the walk. SSP Masood said that ITP is taking steps to educate motorists and this walk is part of the campaign. “It is the public that benefits from better road safety conditions,” he said. “Better road sense means people’s lives and vehicles are protected from undue harm.”

ITP officials said they had started a campaign recently to curb illegal practices such as driving unregistered vehicles, wheeling, under-age driving and driving without licence.

They said the ITP is also trying to maintain lane discipline and has launched an initiative to reserve the fast lane on highways for overtaking.

The participants of the walk pledged their support for making the roads safer in the capital.
