The national team’s development, over the years, has remained stagnant. Despite pointing out what needs to be done and identifying the key areas, there have only been slight improvements. Our players seem to have a tough time adapting to changing circumstances during the course of a tournament. After giving encouraging performances at the start of tournaments, they keep reverting to their original style of play, which has not been too conducive to winning. The changes required of players need to take place at a much junior level. It is difficult for even the most highly-qualified coaches to change the way senior and experienced players approach the sport. In other words, it is difficult to change their habits.
It is high time that a fresh set of legs is introduced and strategic planning is done on a long-term basis. Dropping and retaining the senior players on a rotation basis has proved to be fruitful for one event and disastrous for the next. A balanced approach needs to be adopted and juniors need to slowly make their way into the national team. Pakistan hockey has seen its lowest ebb and the only way from here is upwards.

I remember when Abbasi wanted to fast while practicing then everyone blamed coach. Now why complain? You get what you pay for.
we r crying over the asia cup as if it happened suddenly. we shud have seen it coming after last world cup and back to back set backs in every tournament. when was the last time when any of us saw a school hockey game? systematic extinction of school hockey has resulted in the sporting disaster which is not a matter of one day.
When a nation stops evolving, regression is inevitable.
@F Khan: I agree with most of what you have written but I don't think that we can ever reach the number one position. Our slide started when astro-turf became standard in competitions. With more countries starting to play our old style of hockey could only last so long. Physically fit, scientifically educated and trained, fast and powerful players started dominating. It is not surprising that the Dutch, Germans, Australians, Koreans and other fit teams started defeating Pakistan and India regularly. South Asian teams do not dominate in any fast paced game no matter what. We lack killer instinct and strength that is why our record in Olympics is pathetic at best even though we keep talking about our large populations. I am sorry to say but we are living on the past glories and hockey would be another thing of the past. Regards, M
I think the national side played well within their means in the Asia Cup. The loss to Malaysia was fighting. The downfall of the hockey is a long story. Our passion is cricket.Hockey has been wiped out of School specially in Punjab and Karachi which gave most of the young blood.Hockey players earn 5% of the cricket.Movies are made’main houn shahid afridi’ and ‘not main houn shahnaz shaikh’.Do we expect that a young school boy will travel all the way to a practice on astro turf @ hcp stadium from landhi, korangi, orangi and new karachi daily? hockey died not at asia cup @ KL but 30 years ago when we ignored it in favour of cricket.we got neither of it.we have to start all over again and even then it will take 15 years to be at the top.choice is ours?
