Sania books semi-final berth in New Delhi

NEW DEHLI: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza beat eighth-seed Marina Erakovic from New Zealand 6-2, 6-3 to book a place in the semi-finals. The second-seed registered the win through powerful ground-strokes, sending down three aces to finish her task in less than an hour.

Meanwhile, men’s top-seed Somdev Devvarman advanced to the semi-finals as well when he beat New Zealand’s Rubin Statham 6-3, 6-4.

India’s first wrestling gold

Geeta won the women’s 55-kilogramme freestyle wrestling to become the first Indian woman wrestler to win a title. The Indian dominated the early exchanges, throwing her opponent Emily Bensted of Australia to the mat twice but was unable to pin her.

Pool problems mount

Commonwealth Games organisers launched an investigation into the water quality at the troubled event’s pool after reports that over 50 swimmers had fallen ill. Around 40 English competitors and 12 Australians had complained of feeling unwell, with team officials insisting that the problem area was the warm-up pool.

Olympic bronze medallists Andrew Lauterstein and Hayden Stoeckel failed to start in the 100-metre butterfly and 100-metre backstroke heats because of “gastric” problems.

Record track gold haul

Australia’s cyclists made history by picking up a record 10th gold medal in a clean sweep that left the competition scrambling for the minor places.

The Australians won the men’s and women’s sprints, the women’s scratch and the men’s team pursuit to push their tally to 10 golds from 11 events, smashing their own record of eight set in 2002.

Clarke wins 100m gold

Jamaica’s Lerone Clarke made the most of Usain Bolt’s absence to storm to the men’s 100-metre title crossing the line in 10.12 seconds. It was a powerful run by the Clarke who capitalised on Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell’s absence. Mark Lewis-Francis won the silver and Aaron Amstrong grabbed bronze.
