PESHAWAR:

Following a ban on fresh recruitments by the Higher Education Department (HED), the provincial government has now asked the HED to collect data on appointments made during the Awami National Party’s (ANP) tenure.

This is reportedly in response to the chief minister’s complaint cell alleging irregularities in the appointments.

Officials privy to the data collection process told The Express Tribune the HED had started collecting information following complaints made to the cell. The officials confirmed the department had asked all public sector universities to send details regarding recruitment during the ANP government.

“People allege the ANP inducted a majority of politically affiliated people in various universities,” said a high-ranking HED official requesting anonymity. A majority of the complainants claim there have been irregularities in Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM).”

The official said complaints have been filed against all universities, but the department has asked around seven to eight universities in particular, including AWKUM, to send the information pertaining to the 2008 to 2013 period.

“We have been focusing on all complaints, but since we have received a number of protests against AWKUM, we are going to collect this data first and follow it up with a fact-finding mission to probe the allegations,” the official said. He added action would be taken against those responsible if the allegations are proven true.

Mushtaq Ghani, advisor to the chief minister on higher education, confirmed the reports and said the complaints suggested irregularities in different universities. “This is why the department has banned fresh recruitments since July 5,” he added.

“We asked them (the universities) to provide details on recruitments,” said Ghani. “Some universities have followed these directions but a few, including AWKUM, are yet to provide relevant documents.”

Earlier this month, the HED prepared a list of all its inefficient, ill-reputed and politically inducted employees following a letter issued by K-P Chief Minister Pervez Khattak. The letter directed different departments to identify all irregular employees, including those recruited for their political background.

ANP brought all those puppet Vice Chancellors during last tenure including 8 Vice chancellors appointed at the same time during last days of the previous government. All these corrupt vice chancellors should be immediately suspended till investigation is complete as this ANP members group of corrupt Vice Chancellors will try to disrupt those investigations.
