LAHORE:

The Allama Iqbal Open University has allocated Rs100 million to provide financial aid to its students and has announced a fee-waiver programme for its students living flood-hit areas, AIOU Vice Chancellor Nazir Ahmad Sangi told media persons at the inauguration of AIOU’s regional examination office and a computer lab at its Lahore Campus.

AIOU Controller of Examinations Hamid Khan Niazi, Students’ Affairs Director Mian Muhammad Aslam and Regional Director Rasool Bakhsh Behram were also present on the occasion.

Sangi said that the university had earlier allocated Rs10 million annually to provide its students financial aid and some of those funds had not been spent and had accumulated. He said that those funds would now be used.

Dr Sangi said that he had doubled the Students’ Fund from Rs10 to Rs20, which would be deposited in the Students’ Welfare account.

The AIOU had also set aside Rs20 million to recruit students as part-time workers. This would help them financially and provide them hands-on training.

He said the university would soon hold a tree plantation campaign, and flood drive.

“Two students have already been hired to work at the Lahore regional centre examination centre,” he said.

The AIOU was planning to establish a Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education in south Punjab, Sindh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and central Punjab, Sangi said. The university’s number of students had increased from a million to 1.35 million in three years.
