In the absence of a proper anti-dengue drive, the virus has rapidly spread to other parts of Swat Valley and the number of infected patients swelled to 250 on Saturday.
According to the district health office (DHO), a total of 250 patients were reported to have contracted the virus in the district. Of these, 125 are receiving treatment at Saidu Teaching Hospital.
Outbreak
Dozens of dengue cases have also surfaced from Charbagh tehsil, where locals complained the district government had taken no precautionary measures.
“We asked the tehsil assistant commissioner (AC) to conduct a fumigation drive. However, he said there was no need for one,” claimed Sanaullah Khan, an elder from Upper Bagh Mohallah.
Three cases were also reported in Matta tehsil, but the patients’ families shifted them to Saidu Teaching Hospital because Matta Hospital has reportedly made no arrangements for dengue victims.
Dwindling facilities
With the numbers increasing drastically, Saidu Teaching Hospital is faced with a shortage of beds and many patients are forced to lie in the hospital’s lawn.
“We arranged our own bed, got the test done from a private laboratory and bought the medicines ourselves. Even then, we have to keep waiting for the doctors,” said Ramanat, a resident of Mingora attending to his son.
Fazal Subhan, the father of a child suffering from dengue, said: “They have taken my son’s blood sample and I have been waiting since morning for the results. Whenever I go to the laboratory, the assistants keep telling me to come back later. It is evening now and they still haven’t tested it.”
Affected people also criticised their elected MNA Murad Saeed for not visiting the area. “We have not seen the MNA since he was elected. We are very disappointed with him,” said Akbar Aman, a patient receiving treatment at the hospital.
However, Salimur Rehman, elected MNA from NA-30, Swat-II earlier visited Saidu Teaching Hospital. He met the patients and assured them of complete support from the government.
Moreover, some young volunteers took over the task to fumigate the hospital. “We waited for three days to get anti-dengue spray from the DHO. We received it today and are carrying out the drive from our own resources,” Bakht Haroon, one of the volunteers, told The Express Tribune.
On the other hand, attendants claimed the price of dengue test has been fixed at Rs350 for private laboratories, but they continue to charge higher rates. “The laboratory charged me Rs700, while another person I know was charged Rs900. Besides charging so much, they make us wait 24 hours for the results,” lamented Zubair Khan, a resident of Qambar.
Government reacts
The district administration of Swat constituted 12 teams late Saturday to stop further spread of dengue in the district.
Babozai Assistant Commissioner Farrukh Atiq said the teams will conduct awareness drives, adding over 40 spray pumps have been handed over to elders of different areas. He said fumigation has been conducted in various areas and patients in critical condition have been referred to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.
The district administration of neighbouring Lower Dir has also been put on high-alert so as to take steps to prepare special wards in Timergara in case of the virus spreading there.

Can anyone tell here, what does the Dengue test means,is it simple CBC,which should not cost above 100 rupees even now,as it was 90 during last two seasons of dengue,or is it IgG/IgM ,which should not be done before clinical assumption, suggestive CBC results, and 5 days of fever in a suspected Dengue patient, Can the reporter enlighten us upon this.As far as spraying with fog is concerned ,it has a limited value in overall dengue control, but when dengue patients are being discovered,it should be done by the government to reduce the already alive adult mosquitoes, which are infecting people. Situation all over the country is same, its pakistan, which we are talking about, authorities are non-political people, and their character is same, all over the country, believe me,me being a researcher on dengue for people.
@ Arman and @ Imran,
Why do I have the feeling that you both are one and the same? Any how, its really isn't my business. Going forward, I am making perfect sense to people who do not possess a myopic mindset and have come to realize that IK was nothing but a toady and pawn of a very minuscule section of the establishment.
I am also of the opinion that NS should now dispense with this disposition of tolerance and reconciliation and should encourage the downfall of KPK Government. People like IK do not deserved to be treated with any sort of respect.
PTI is revamping the health infrastructure at all levels and the changes will be felt in some time. Preventive healthcare is one of the main components of the reforms. Let them implement their agenda...meanwhile if there are any in local admin responsible for negligence in preventive measures should be dealt with.
@ Adnan Siddiqui Your brain is full of non sense. God bless U
@ Adnan Siddiqi I am reading most of your posts here and there. None of your view make sense. You are just a puppet of Nawaz league thats it. You are comparing your leader who is controlling punjab since 80's with IK, who just been here since two months and you all started a hefty comparison. Compare him, once he will also cover 25 yrs ruling on KPK.
@NewYorker:
Give me a break dude! A provisional government which is charging an arm and a leg for Dengue tests, I would not for a second believe that the same government would provide any sort of "Free Meds" to the public.
Kpk Govt should declare emergency in Swat. first they need to increase the number of Doctors and paramedical staff in the hospitals and provide proper treatment and diagnostic facilities to the patients. The local adminstration must ensure fumigation in all prevalent areas, and must arrange awaerness campaigns in whole swat. Also the Govt need to prevent further spread of the disease to other areas.
Imran Khan Stop your Dhaandlee Mania! Poor Pashtuns chose yu to solve their problems not mere slogans. Show Up Please!
Poor people of Swat going through too much: Taliban, Floods, war and now this. May Almighty protect the poor souls!
ET I hope you first of all post my comment and receive some positive criticism. And second of all, I hope you tell the people that the govt had started an anti-dengue drive weeks ago, regularly conducting sprays and fumigation. The recent increase is due to the rain and the govt is trying its best to control by providing free medicines and conducting sprays. It seems to me you guys always report from an anti-PTI view.
When dengue broke out in Punjab, instead of accepting it as a natural disease pti blamed pmln for it and asked for resignations. Now please pti resign.
On another note: once again our journalists seems to be the biggest traitors of the country, always ensuring the negative news is highlighted. India, Italy, South Africa, Nepal, etc had bigger dengue breakouts, but the world only knows about dengue breakout in Pakistan, just because our media loves to damage the image of our country. Start reporting everything positive and leave pick pocketing for tabloids like thesun, Etc.
Anyway hope pti is coming to senses understanding that the issues they would protest against are natural and when in the same situation can't adopt or practise what was preached.
Shame on Dengue Khan and his incompetent CM who wouldn't even qualify to be a Naib Qasid in KPK Government.
So after PMLN let's see how PTI handles the epidemic. Murad Saeed is off to a gloss start
