Two men and a young boy were shot dead by unidentified assailants outside a madrassah near Khanna Pul on Friday night.
Two men, riding a motorcycle, opened fire in front of the Jamia Madrassah Madinatul-Uloom, a religious seminary located on the Service Road near Khanna Pul, police said.
The victims were identified as Qari Arif, Muhammad Darwesh and Shakirullah, a student of the seminary.
The bodies were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for legal formalities, the police said.
According to the police, the attackers fled the scene. A police spokesman said the area was right at the Islamabad-Rawalpindi boundary. The spokesman said it was too soon to comment whether the attack was sectarian.
Leaders of Wafaqul Madaris condemned the attack and asked the authorities to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incident.
After the incident, seminary students blocked the Islamabad Expressway in protest.
