The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday extended its winning streak in the country’s biggest ever by-elections, consolidating its grip on power.
The PML-N swept the country’s most populous province, Punjab – which is also its bastion – as it won 11 out of the 15 provincial assembly seats and bagged five out of the six National Assembly seats, according to unofficial results.
Similarly, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) also cemented its position in their stronghold province of Sindh.
Among the National Assembly seats, PPP bagged three constituencies, PTI came out on top in two, while the Awami National Party (ANP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) in one constituency each.
Election authorities withheld results from two constituencies of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa where women were reportedly disfranchised.
Unexpected upsets
Perhaps the most impressive feat pulled by the party was the victory of Haji Obaidullah Khan Shadi Khel in NA-71 in Mianwali, which was the native constituency of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. The turn of tides in this constituency is a major political upset for the PTI that had no long-term political strategy in the by-polls – as it had relied solely on the ‘Imran Khan connection’.
In another blow to PTI, Ghulam Ahmed Bilour of ANP comfortably won against his rival candidate Gul Badshah in the historically important NA-1 Peshawar seat. With the counting in 199 polling stations being almost complete, Ghulam Bilour led the race after receiving 29,934 votes, and Badshah secured 24,282 votes. Twelve candidates contested among which 8 were independent, two others belonged to the small political parties, while the major contest was between Bilour and Gul Bacha of PTI.
However, PTI managed to secure NA-48 Islamabad that was vacated by the party’s President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi. PTI’s Asad Umar defeated PML-N’s Ashraf Gujjar in this federal capital constituency in Islamabad’s rural areas – a traditional PML-N seat.
PTI also managed to defeat JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s brother, Maulana Attaur Rahman. Maulana Fazl had decided to quit NA-27 Lakki Marwat after he won from NA-24. The PTI candidate (retd) Col Amirullah received 28,500 votes in 175 polling stations, while Maulana Attaur Rahman received 23,770 votes.
PTI’s Sardar Ali Raza Khan Dareeshak won PP-247 by defeating PML-N’s Abdul Qadir Khan Mamdot. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif vacated this seat and the PTI victory serves a political upend for PML-N’s stronghold. Raza Khan is known to have won purely because of his personal vote bank and lineage – he is the son of former federal and provincial minister Sardar Nasrullah Khan Dareeshak.
Meanwhile, another provincial assembly upset took place with yet another PTI victory. Candidate Ahmed Ali Khan Dareeshak won PP-243 by defeating two Khosa brothers who had contested the election on different party tickets. Ahmed Ali Khan won this seat purely because of his party affiliation and campaigning – not his personality – as he snatched the Khosas’ old home seat. PML-N’s Senator Zulfiqar Khan Khosa had vacated this seat after the May 11 election.
Not many surprises here
The PML-N also won the NA-68 seat that was vacated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. In NA-129 Lahore, PML-N’s Shazia Mubashir secured an emphatic win. Meanwhile, PPP’s Ghulam Rabbani Khar was leading against Dasti in NA-177 Muzaffargarh until the filing of this report.
PPP’s Shazia Marri made her way to the National Assembly from NA-235 Sanghar, which was no surprise to Sindh. She defeated Khuda Buksh of PML-F's led by Pir Pagara. Another PPP woman candidate, Shamsun Nisa Memon, defeated Riaz Shah Shirazi of PML-N in NA-237 Thatta in a tough contest.
The MQM swept Karachi – just as they had predicted so robustly. In NA-254 Karachi, MQM’s Muhammad Ali Rashid secured a comfortable win against PTI’s Naeem Shaikh. Other Karachi seats were also bagged by the party. In addition, MQM won a Sindh provincial assembly in Mirpurkhas.
Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party’s (PkMAP) Abdul Qahar Khan won the only National Assembly seat from Balochistan (NA-262) that went for the by-polls. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Qari Muhaamd Sher Ali secured the second-highest number of votes.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, PTI retained their NA-5 Nowshera and NA-13 Swabi-II seats. Meanwhile, PTI and JUI-F were still battling over the K-P Assembly seats as the votes were still being counted till the filing of this story. JUI-F was leading in PK-70 Bannu-1, while ANP candidate Ahmad Khan Bahadur won in PK-23 Mardan.
There were a total of 519 candidates contesting for 41 seats — 15 of National Assembly and 26 of provincial assemblies constituencies. The election authorities have withheld the results in NA-5 Nowshera and NA-27 Lakki Marwat where women were barred from casting their votes.
The new date for re-polling has not been announced.
The official results still were being compiled by the election authorities till filing of the report.
Correction: The earlier version of the story carried incorrect names of some politicians. The error has been fixed.

So now Its all obvious PTI vs Rest ..from election to anti PTI comments on this page. Great to see statusquo coming close.
ET my comments not published why ? do I have right to ask in this era of freedom of speech you people of media chanting about.
Why cant ET make a table which show how many seats each party has lost or won versus their vacated seats.
This table will show PTI and JUIF as loosers, MQM as same as before, and PPP, ANP and PMLN as gaining seats overall.
CAN SOMEBODY COME UP WITH SUCH TABLE . BUT PLEASE AGAINST VACATED SEATS PER PARTY AS THIS IS THE CRITERTIA , NOT TOTAL SEATS.
Basically, people have punished big mouths.PTI and JUIF.I voted for PTI in genral elections but stand disappointed by their total negativity and pandering to likes of Tahir ul Qadri..
Do fresh elections in December in Pakhtunkhwa and lets se who is having the mandate of the people, if you are democratic. . A chaotic government is rejected in just 2 months. bravo to the people who realized the mistake and decided to show their mandate against the chaos.
Voters have proved PML N is far better then PTI while governing the motherland. Koe Shak???
congrats to PML-n. I am proud that my family voted for PML-n. PTI is exposed in just 2 months. They lost their strong holds.
Again KITEs are flyng all over the Karachi and Mirpurkhas Skies.
Can anyone tell me where is PTI's tola of badmash.
Results shows how miserablly they have failed in Karachi even not able to reach 5000 marks.
WELL DONE MQM.
@Usman: Asad Umer is the son of the General who according to the Hamood-ur-Rehman commission should be tried for treason for making possible the breakup of Pakistan in 1971. Hope that he will apologize to the nation for the misdeed of his father
IK has to dissociate his party from Jamaat Islami and its extremist ideology as people want PTI to be a secular and inclusive party. People need clarity on extremism and terrorism fom IK and its party. IK and PTI should stand up for minorities rights including ahmadis if wants to win big time in future. Alliance with JI and right wing parties was a bad idea.
@All Pakistanis - Welcome to fickleness & uncertainties of democracy.... Blue-eyed boys (PTI) a month back are now in the doghouse.
Winning is just half the story, to deliver for the people is the more important other half. In KPK the PTI is learning this the hard way and on the national front the PML-N already realises its floundering.......and then again its the PML-N and realisiations come slowly to them.
PTI won't learn... Trust Me!!!
Im a PTI fan, but very surprised at how people view PTI walaahs with very myopic sight! I think results go on to show Pakistani awaam deserve PMLN and that's absolutely fine friends. By no means does this mean PTI should go home or retire! Its a relatively fresh party, that has stirred Pakistans political situation atleast in some urban areas. Look at the results above and you will see still people in this pathetic nation are winning based on their abba jis name, including PMLN,PPP and even some in PTI. Until this changes, no one whether a roaring lion, a striking teer or a tarazu can manage Pakistan. Peace!
Once all bye elections results are out .. PTI will have net gain .. .but you will not mention it will you ?
@Khan: PML(N) in National Assembly retained 2 seats and able to win 3 additional seats. Whereas in Punjab Assembly, PML(N) retained 5 seats, lost 3 seats and win 6 additional seats. NA: Previously PML(N) hold 2 seats and now 5 seats Punjab Assembly: Previously PML(N) hold 8 and now 11 seats.
Get your facts right regarding PML(N). Your fact regarding PTI are correct.
@Lolz: PTI erased PPPP from major parts of Punjab and has taken 2nd position.
I will say only one thing for imran khan, "Gharoor ka sar hamesha neecha hota hai".
@Syedpk: You are right brother. Since MQM have won, now I have forgotten everything that happened before my eyes on May 11.
@Max:
Yes because PTI is nothing more then a nuisance value with extreme arrogance
IK what next. White paper or black paper.
MQM wins. Do you have any problem ? If yes, then keep whining, no body has time to pay attention to you.
PTI lost NA71 & NA1 PTI retained NA 5, 13 & 48 PTI added NA 27, PK70, pp243 & 247
And some people still think PTI lost the election ----- LOL Crazy :)
@jibran: PML(N) have won 5 NA seats. Previously it won 2. So, it gained three seats. However, PML(N) lost 2 PP seats in Rajunpur and DG Khan.
We lost election in Mianwali because of NO choice of right candidate after Ayla Khan disqualification and in Peshawar PTI split because of allotment of ticket
Lol!!! People celebrating win of MQM in Karachi. We do accept our defeat but are of opinion that Karachites must not cry on the bloodshed then. In fact there is no excuse to cry now on killings. You are paying the price of your poor choices.
On getting defeat in Peshawar and Mianwali, now IK should issue white paper of 4000 pages.
Happy day for Pakistan. All my best wishes for our leader Nawaz Sharif. I congratulate the voters who voted for PML-N. I feel sorry for PTI fans who are blindly following most immatured politician.
I am a leftist but in the above comments, i see PTI a big threat for all the parties (except PPP). EVEN THE OPPONENTS WROTE PTI MORE TIMES THAN THE NAME OF THEIR OWN PARTY, SHOWS THE POPULARITY...
Pti lost 2 seats and won 6 how is that defeat? This is great news for Pti and those who wish for a corruption free Pakistan.
To all haters, of PTI.
GROW UP!
Allah bless Pakistan. Allah bless PML(N). Allah bless Nawaz Sharif.
Ppl seem more happy at PTI losing then their party winning....i think its high time that we as an audience/observers mature as well...
@Saleem: @Syedpk: How can you even compare the actual elections against the by-elections? For simple reason, the results of a minor event can not supersede the outcome / result of a major event. The only time we can have some reliable elections is when we will have electronic voting. Until then it will always be one party's stance / word against the other and same old blame game will continue to be played at all levels.
Congratulations to MQM. Rest in peace PTI.
PTI lost NA71 & NA1 PTI retained NA 5, 13 & 48 PTI added NA 27, PK70, pp243 & 247
Considering this i dont think its a set back... Pmln lost seats that were vacated by shahbaz sharif & khosa...
PTI coming to its logical end before they could even begin. IK's big words coming to haunt them as much as anything! You can only do so much with hollow promises, sensationalistic politics, and past-cricket connections; get a few emotional teenagers onboard to change the world aka "naya Pakistan". Its all fair game, the problem, however, is, this does not last for very long, not even 2 months in PTI's case!
Some people are very funny here. PTI's lost the NA seat which was a kind of shock but as the results showed there, PTI's voters decided to remain at home than to vote for any other party. In NA 71, same thing happened with PTI. PTI held its own in Islamabad which is very good. PTI won seat vacated by Shahbaz Sharif and also overcome Khosa brothers in DG Khan too which no one ever thought. PTI defeated Moulana's brother in yet another new seat so overall if PTI lost from old firms, they won new forts too. Even the seats PTI lost in central Punjab are mainly closely contested. With reference to MQM in Karachi, they played to their strengths and won fairly so good for them.
Don't care about the rest but I am happy that Asad Umar won and JUI-F was defeated in Laki Marwat.
Raza Khan is known to have won purely because of his personal vote bank and lineage
Now is this impartial reporting. Why did Bilor won, or any other candidate. Could you please dig about them as well?
The winning of Ghulam Ahmed Bilour clearly shows that this nation is not ready for a change and they want to keep on trying failed politicians. This is pathetic.
IK should adopt the 'elephant' as the election symbol ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ and ride on one to revive his popularity.
@Khan: "Lion ROARS yet again in Pakistan !" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sad day for Pakistan that the best party it can find is PML N. Six months later it will be "Lion MEOWS yet again in Pakistan !"
So, PTI lost 2 seats, retained 4 sets and added 4 seats to its tally. Not sure how this an be termed a defeat. Above all that, for the first time, a person of the calibre of Asad Umer has entered the parliament. That is a victory for democracy in Pakistan.
strange y people turn towards ANP, AGAIN THE SAME CHOICE,means there will be no change at all
Time to stop the ridiculous "dhandli" accusations. Or will IK say that the by-elections were also fixed?
Immy, have a nice day. Recover soon.
PMLN roars to victory? Nice try ET, but sorry to break news to you. Both PTI and PMLN lost their seats.
PTI, can we pls have another white paper PTI: Dharna style followed by white paper style, and then disintegration style
Pti did aggressive campaign in by elections played negative tactics, blamed election commission, humiliated people's mandate by undermining success of other parties and even targeted Supremes court the only respectable forum in the country however they could not make people fool this time as Pakistani people had decided to gives imran a exemplary lesson "pride hath a fall "
The shameless PTI blind voters will still cry foul.
Soon the PTI deniers and their leader Imran Khan will declare to issue another white paper regarding the rigging in these by-polls. And then they will wait for their next contempt of court to actually forge and release one...
Our country is facing murder, robberies, floods, loadshedding, bomb blasts and yet by elections are more important.
pleased asad umar has won
In mianwali PTI workers were distributed into three groups... One still supporting PTI candidate due to ideology....2nd group boycotted election t and third one decided to vote for PMLN candidate as they were not happy with pti candidate
People of Peshawar did not appreciate Imran Khan dumping them after winning his seat. Good move to vote ANP.
pti lost na1 and na71 because of internal conflicts.... and unknown pti candidate defeated fazlur rehman's brother because pti lakki marwat worked as a team... imran khan should immediately resolve internal rifts and should throw out snakes within the party..
Susu-nami Flushed :D
Lion ROARS yet again in Pakistan !
People have lost hope in democracy and in Pakistan no wonder the voter turn outs were so low. Everybody knows that there votes won't be counted and that who ever wins has the same policies based on greed and corruption. All parties are just at each others throats while the masses suffer in poverty so the people have decided to might as well do something productive instead of putting their lives in danger and wasting time instead of doing something of absolutely no value.
We will miss you Imran Bhai. Enjoy retirement.
No one should be allowed to run for elections from more than one constituency.
I wonder all those who been claiming that last elections were rigged will say now.
In reference to MQM wins in Karachi. To all PTIans with all due respect, will you accept the defeat now in Karachi or still lay the claim "that the elections were rigged, and if it were not rigged PTI would have won all Karachi seats" ?? PS: Army was deployed this time around
Congratulations to all the victorious parties! Special congratulations to Asad Omar of PTI; I have high regards for that shrewd yet down to earth man.
PTI should withdraw its white paper now and stop blaming ECP.
PTI has been rejected !! Happy day for Pakistan !
PTI is got a good slogan but poor politics and management of party!!
