HYDERABAD:

A district and session court took notice on Thursday of the suspension of health services due to the doctors’ strike at the hospital of the Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences (PUMHS), Benazirabad.

The district and session judge Abdul Ghafoor Kalhoro ordered the hospital’s medical superintendent to submit a report by Friday.

At least nine children were among the 36 people who died at the hospital since the strike started six days ago. The doctors boycotted work at the hospital in reaction to the kidnapping of the son of Dr Shamsuddin Shaikh, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences. The doctor’s son Shujauddin Shaikh was kidnapped near Sakrand taluka on the National Highway. Dr Shaikh was also in the car but the kidnappers only took away his son.

The doctors have been protesting for the recovery of Shujjauddin without payment of ransom. They complained that police were not pursuing the case seriously.
