The anxiety of clients of Sindh’s very own Double Shah, Amanat Ali aka Don Golo, has been somewhat put to rest after the man, known for doubling people’s money within a month, was arrested by the Ghotki police on Thursday evening.

Ghotki SSP Abdul Salam Shaikh, while confirmed the arrest, told The Express Tribune that Don Golo had taken shelter at the residence of Sardar Salahuddin Golo in Kandhkot. Shaikh said that they managed to arrest the man on the run after the sardar was warned that unless he handed over Golo to the police, he would also be nominated in an FIR. A joint investigation team of police and the Federal Investigation Agency will be formed to investigate the scam, he said.

Political and religious parties had raised objections to Golo’s “illegal and un-Islamic” business, clients had been protesting outside his house to get their money back. The police had cordoned off his village, Naukot, for the last three days to “safeguard the lives and properties of the residents.”

Earlier on Thursday morning, the police broke into the house but Don Golo was nowhere to be found. According to sources, not only did Don Golo run away with the money of his clients but also made sure not to leave behind any of his own valuables.

The clients of Don Golo, some of whom have lost millions of rupees, appeared resentful towards the police and held them responsible for his escape.

When contacted, Ubauro DSP Jawed Karim Napar confirmed that the police broke into Don Golo’s house and conducted a raid but he had already escaped. “The police had cordoned off Naukot but it is a big village,” said Napar. “There are more than 2,500 houses and it was not possible for the police to keep an eye on every house. Taking advantage of the darkness, the Don probably escaped at night.”

A large number of people also gathered at the Daharki police station to register an FIR against Don Golo, who according to them had taken away their hard-earned money. The assistant head constable of Daharki police station, Mohammad Ayub, told The Express Tribune that many people had come in to register an FIR and so far, four cases against Don Golo had been registered. The complainants include Mohammad Hakim Samejo, Abdul Fatah Samejo and Gul Mohammad Menak.
