Open Mind Pakistan, a unique trainee programme for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), was launched on Wednesday. The initiative was jointly inaugurated by Telenor Pakistan and Special Talent Exchange Programme (STEP) — at the Helen Keller Friendship Centre at the Directorate General of Special Education — under the mobile company’s flagship disability project Khuddar Pakistan.
Khuddar Pakistan aims to create awareness about disabled persons and develop technologies that will give them a chance to participate actively in society.
The telecom company sponsors technology training labs for PWDs at National Institute of Special Education, National Training Centre for Special Persons and STEP.
STEP was conceived and initiated by PWDs themselves in 1997. Being a cross-disability organisation, STEP is committed to empowering individuals and organisations and sensitising society about adopting a rights-based approach.
STEP has advocated a just, accessible and inclusive community wherein human rights, citizenship, contribution and potential of PWDs are respected and celebrated. Promoting volunteerism, awareness campaigns, leadership training, and innovative livelihood opportunities, are among STEP’s major endeavours.
