BHAKKAR:

A man, said to have been a member of a banned militant organisation, was shot dead by unidentified men near district headquarters hospital here on Wednesday.

Police said Mian Ghulam Muhammad was apparently on his way home when some motorcyclists shot him, killing him on the spot. Witnesses said the assailants’ faces were covered with cloth.

The incident was followed by a protest demonstration in which protesters placed the body on Khansar Chowk and burnt tyres.

The protesters also forced the shops in the area to close down and threatened to vandalise those that would remain open. Traffic remained suspended for more than four hours.

The protest was led by Maulana Manzoor Ahmad Akasha and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haqqani.

They condemned the police’s inability to maintain peace and provide security to the people. They urged the government to take the incident seriously. They gave police 48 hours to arrest the suspects. They said they would take to streets if Ghulam Muhammad’s murderers were not arrested.
