ISLAMABAD: Inspector General (IG) Police Islamabad Sikandar Hayat Khan, commenting on the Islamabad stand-off, has stated that the Islamabad police lack the appropriate training and equipment required to deal with the situation, Express News reported on Wednesday.
In his reply to the interior ministry over the Islamabad standoff, Khan said he did not reach the crime scene as SSP Operations Dr Rizwan told him he will be there.
He said that in a phone conversation, Dr Rizwan said that he was close to the scene and was on his way there.
It was Dr Rizwan’s day off, but upon hearing about the incident, he decided to go to the scene.
The IG claimed that he intended to go to the crime scene but once he learned that Dr Rizwan would be there, he decided to go to his office instead.
He added that he was in constant communication with juniors in the staff and was issuing advice to them as the situation progressed.
Khan also blamed the media for being partly responsible for dragging out the incident.
The stand off that had been created on Constitution Avenue in Islamabad after firing on the police from Malik Sikandar Hayat, ended after almost six hours when Pakistan Peoples Party leader Zamrud Khan approached and tried to grab him.
The man armed with two sub-machine guns and accompanied with his wife and two children had driven into the middle of Constitution Avenue on Thursday evening where he fired on the police and started a stand off.
Police tried to negotiate with him and police and Rangers commandos surrounded his car while keeping their distance.

The police handled the event very well. That is how such cases pan out in civilised nations. Why did everyone want a drug addict and a sick man shot dead when it was obvious that he was not going to harm anyone.
Our police did not have even rubber bullets while all the money is spent on Army. It is not lack of training, but lack of commitment and responsibility.
who made you IGP Islamabad that you are telling police lack training to deal one man squad...
I belive what our IG meant was; Facing Sou Moto for killing that innocent young man at a park in Khi at point blank & that poor taxi driver father infront of his 6yr old son, then letting loose 250Talibaan prisoners he is sure his dept is not fully equiped to handle real jobs.
There were a few commentators applauding the performance of police from this episode, calling it very professional for not having killed the guy (they couldn't have killed him even if they wanted to, shocking as it is, they are not just not good enough to tackle an untrained individual with a seemingly low IQ level! Forget about real militants). I wonder what do these commentators have to say now?!
If it lacked training, its you, IG, only you who's responsible. You must resign or be fired with immediate effect.

Wow, inspector General Police for our capital, Sir, the truth is more shameful than shocking if you are right! So, our police if fully trained and equipped to protect looters, corrupt politicians, gang rapists, and to facilitate & promote brothels houses! You guys lack the training to handle a single man surrounded by his family? Once again shame on you, Sir!! I don’t know how others react after reading his confession? What our senior police need are more Prados, Pijaros and Land Cruisers with twice the number of escorts..........I say this because our elected politicians will recommend funds which will be used for the above. This incident will be used to further politicise the police department...... if that is possible.
