QUETTA: Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire Sunday on a checkpoint of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) in Pakistan's troubled southwest, killing one soldier and wounding two others, officials said.

FC forces retaliated after gunmen opened fire at a check post at Sariab Road in Quetta killing one of the suspects. Soon after, the FC forces surrounded the area and initiated a search operation.

A police official, Bashir Brohi, confirmed the incident and casualties. Nobody has so far claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Quetta, the largest city and the provincial capital of Balochistan, has been prone to several attacks and militant activities in the past. Two people were killed and another sustained injuries in a blast near Sariab Road, Quetta last week.

On August 8, an attack by a suicide bomber at the funeral of a senior policeman in Quetta plunged the country into grief when at least 30 people lost their lives and over 40 others were wounded, of which most were policemen attending the funeral.

First and foremost, we send our heartfelt condolences to the friends and families of the fallen soldiers. Our nations have lost thousands of brave soldiers on both sides of the border. We greatly appreciate all of Pakistan’s sacrifices in countering insurgency. We cannot over emphasize Pakistan’s importance in the region. We cannot have a peaceful region without a peaceful Pakistan. We hope to continue our partnership and achieve our common goals through mutual cooperation. We repeat what James “Jay” Carney, White House Press Secretary, said recently: “Our relationship with Pakistan is extremely important to America’s national security interests. It is a complicated but important relationship. And I’m sure that Secretary Kerry will be having discussions with the Pakistanis about developments in their country, our joint efforts to fight terrorism -- and, as you know, Pakistanis have been among the most significant victims of terrorist attacks -- and also our efforts in Afghanistan.”

How sad. The blood of the defenders of the country is spilled every where in this country. Courts / media continues defamation of these shaheeds. High time to understand the gravity of situation and sift facts from fiction. May God grant the highest place to the shaheeds of FC in heavens. Ameen
