KARACHI:

A day after the police operation near Safari Park in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, which claimed the lives of two police officials, one of the deceased, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Qasim Ghauri, was laid to rest in Karachi while the body of ASI Asif was sent to his hometown, Sialkot.

The six-hour operation on Thursday was carried out against notorious criminal, Zamin Shah Chandio, who was apparently in hiding in the settlements of Hussain Hazara Goth and Madho Goth near Safari Park in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

Four gangsters, including Chandio, were killed in the operation while Gulistan-e-Jauhar SHO Malik Saleem, Bahadurabad SHO Haider Zaidi, ASI Aslam, ASI Amanullah and police constable Azhar were wounded.

An investigation team headed by DIG East has been constituted to look into the incident but so far, no substantial progress has been made. “What is clear right now is that there was a dispute between two groups of land mafia - one lead by Mohammad Pariyal Shah and other by Arshad, both backed by the nationalist parties of Sindh over the plot,” said DIG Tahir Naveed while talking to The Express Tribune.

When asked about the involvement of police officials with the gangsters, in specific SHO Saleem’s, DIG Naveed said, “We cannot rule out the involvement of the Gulistan-e-Jauhar SHO Malik Saleem with the land mafia as it has been brought to our notice. Action against him will be taken according to the law if he is found guilty.”

SHO Saleem was previously suspended by police high-ups following the Shahzeb Khan murder case when he was posted as the Darakshan police station SHO. In Thursday’s operation, he sustained multiple bullet injuries and was admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital

Reports also surfaced that the police have obtained the CCTV footages from the location which suggest that DSP Ghauri was killed by bullets fired by his own men. DIG Naveed, however, disputed any such possibility. “The culprits were using single-barrel rifles as well as G-3. I do not believe that the DSP was gunned down by police’s firing. We will still look into it. It is hard to prove but we will investigate.”

The police are waiting for the postmortem report of DSP Ghauri for the ongoing investigations.

Laid to rest

DSP Ghauri lived with his family in Block-10 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. His funeral prayers were offered at the Garden Police Headquarters after his son Farrukh, who was in the United States, arrived in Karachi.

A large number of people, including Sindh IGP Shahid Nadeem Baloch, Karachi Additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebu, DIG East Captain (retd) Tahir Naveed, and other colleagues and acquaintances of the deceased attended the funeral services. The deceased was later buried at the graveyard in Defence Housing Authority. The body of another martyred official, ASI Asif, was moved to his hometown, Sialkot, for the burial process.

More operations

Separately, the Anti-Encroachment police, water board and city government conducted an operation against encroachments in Madho Goth, Hussain Hazara Goth and their neighbouring areas on Friday. “The land mafia is very active in Madho Goth and its neighbourhoods,” said DIG Naveed. “The operation was conducted to remove the illegal encroachments.”

What a pathetic state of mind Mr. Mir.... Dumb ppl like u are the real source of power of all these so called Nationalist leaders who keep on diving us and live on the hatred they create... pity on u

Islam says to do justice even if its against ur own (brother)... u certainly cant uphold any such act

Land grabbing has added to the lawlessness in Karachi. its as thriving an industry as the bhatta mafia... in fact its older than this... pity our political leaders (including both main stream parties and petty Nationalist parties) use it as a source of their power.

Why cant we realized that by ignoring or supporting the evil act of our kind (ethnicity) we are doing more harm to our ethnicity than good ... What do u want to raise ... a nation of criminals where ur coming generations would live like animals and thugs???
