His appointment follows the resignation of Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim earlier in July.
To fill the gap left by Justice Ebrahim's resignation, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry appointed Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jillani as acting Chief Election Commissioner.
A notification in this regard was issued on Friday. Jillani, is expected to take his oath in Lahore on Saturday.
Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, who oversaw the May 11 general elections, resigned from his post on July 31.
President Asif Ali Zardari had approved the appointment of Ebrahim as the new Chief Election Commissioner in July 2012 after a parliamentary panel selected him for the crucial post. He was the 24th individual to occupy the post after 12 permanent and 11 acting chief election commissioners.
His initial appointment was hailed across the entire political spectrum, as well as the legal fraternity and civil society, but following the May 11 elections, the PPP, PTI and other major political players said the commissioner and the ECP had failed to deliver “free and fair” elections.
Correction: An earlier version of the article incorrectly noted that Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jillani was retired. The error is regretted.

@Muhammad Usman: Thanks, Usman Sahib. I know that it is a temporary arrangement until confirmed by the parliament. However, my concern is about the authority of the CJP here, does the constitution say it in so many words or it's just a suitable interpretation to conveniently assume the power not assigned to the court in this instance.
@Uza Syed
This is constitutional, until a new CEC is confirmed by parliament. This is acting CEC,
Does the CJP has this authority at all? I suspect that it's not part of CJP job description or responsibility assigned to him under any circumstances and if so, does this appointment have any legal standing? Now, can someone please help me understand the situation here.
