MIRANSHAH: Two soldiers were killed on Tuesday when a bomb exploded near a military convoy in the North Waziristan tribal region, local and security officials said.

The remote-controlled roadside bomb, planted by militants, detonated as the convoy from the main town of Miramshah travelled to the nearby Datta Khel Town, a local administration official said.

“Two soldiers were killed and five injured, two of them are in a serious condition,” the official said, requesting anonymity.

A security official here confirmed the casualties, saying that the blast destroyed one military vehicle.

The tribal belt has seen a surge in strikes from US spy planes directed against militants linked to Taliban and al Qaeda who are fighting against more than 152,000 US and Nato troops in Afghanistan.

A missile attack by a pilotless drone in the region on Monday killed eight militants, including five Germans, local security officials said.

The latest attack followed reports in British and US media that an al Qaeda plot to carry out attacks in Britain, France and Germany had been uncovered.

Meanwhile, two Taliban militants, among them a local commander, were killed in a clash with security forces in Swat Valley.

The clash took place when security forces launched a search operation in the Khawazakhela area of the valley. The dead militant commander was identified as Salahuddin. There were no reports of casualties on the side of security forces.
