PESHAWAR:

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday ordered the provincial government to release Zakat funds and sought a report regarding local and district Zakat committees dissolved before the general elections.

Hearing a writ petition filed by Zakat Committee Buner Chairman Muhammad Nisar and Zakat Committee Malakand Chairman Muhammad Nasir Khan, a PHC division bench was informed by Advocate Ayaz Majid that the provincial government froze Zakat funds on April 3 this year.

“The action was taken on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan to make the last general elections transparent. On April 17, district and local Zakat committees were also dissolved for the same purpose,” Majid told the court. The court then ordered the provincial government to release the Zakat fund.
