RAWALPINDI: District Returning Officer (DRO) Jehangir Mir on Thursday allotted election symbols to eight candidates contesting by-polls on the PP-6 Rawalpindi seat in the Punjab Assembly. The seat was vacated by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) after he chose to retain the NA-52 seat. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Wasiq Qayum was allotted bat, Pakistan People’s Party candidate Ammar Mehdi was allotted arrow, PML-N candidate Sarfraz Afzal was allotted tiger, Assad Abbas was allotted bottle, Amin Shahzad Gul was allotted tent, Zafar Iqbal was allotted cow, Zahid Hussain Qureshi was allotted giraffe and Farooq Nazir was allotted water pot. Meanwhile, sources said that behind-the-scene efforts by opposition parties were underway to pit a joint candidate against the PML-N nominee. “If the opposition parties fail to reach a consensus, their chance of winning seems remote,” the sources said.
