In the dead of the night, confronted with this extremely well-planned attack, the prison authorities had clearly been over-powered. DI Khan-based correspondents of different channels, quoting prison and administration officials, reported that dozens of prisoners had escaped. The battle was obviously a one-sided affair until the police and army contingents were called in.
In the midst of this unfolding havoc, another unbelievable saga was unfolding. At around 2am, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) information minister was insisting, as if from Alice in Wonderland, that none of the militant prisoners had fled, and was, in fact, talking to the media in a somewhat reprimanding tone, saying it should not spread rumours.
This happened an hour after all major news channels had already reported that around 250 high-profile prisoners of banned organisations had managed to flee. While district officials were telling the channels that 250 militants had been freed with the help of the attackers, the information minister kept saying that the objective of the attack was not known. He was either in deep denial or deeply ill-informed. Around the same time, the DIG also denied that any prisoner had escaped. Then came the stellar statement from IG Prisons Khalid Abbas, who told ARY that there were no high-profile prisoners there and that he was “wondering why the prison was attacked”. The IG was also heard saying that if “someone attacks from outside, we are not equipped to retaliate against major attack, we are only meant to protect prisoners”.
This was an indirect admission by the IG that initially the attackers must have been given a walkover — at least until the army and additional police force arrived. Not surprisingly, there were also reports of prior warnings conveyed to K-P authorities regarding the attack.
Finally, closer to 3am, the DI Khan commissioner was being quoted as saying that many prisoners had escaped from the prison and that the administration was trying to recapture them. Finally, at around 3.20am, the chief minister’s adviser for prisons said that more than 300 prisoners had escaped.
It should be common sense for anyone to think that any prison, which holds militants, could be a target of an attack. In 2012, 400 militants escaped from the Bannu jail during a similar attack. Last week, militants escaped from an ISI facility in Sukkur. Similarly, militants escaped after staging terrorist attacks, from major hospitals in Karachi and Lahore. Who will stop the terrorists from succeeding in Parachinar, in Quetta, Bannu, in Karachi, etc.?
Significantly, this combination of contradiction and denials by some key political and administrative officials is symptomatic of the chaotic and arbitrary ways in which the deadly issue of terrorism is being dealt with nationwide. Cabinets, administrations and intelligence agencies at the centre and the provinces are either incompetent or in a fear-triggered denial. At best, all we see is patchwork of a response if not paralysis, in tackling an adversary who grows confident by the day. While the government hesitates to exercise its mandate to formulate a security policy, other than leaking some papers derivative of Malayisan and Chinese policies, the debate over holding the APC continues.
We must ask these elected leaders that while Pakistan burns ‘Where are you? Do you understand the danger? Why are you not accordingly commanding your forces to defeat the enemy?’ Victory must be our only option.

@V. C. Bhutani: "Many in India are not proud of Mr Modi or the Gujarat events. . ." I am one of those. Whatever happened in Gujrat, regardless of who started it, was a low point as many Indians died for no reason.
However, I, a typical Congress supporter, will prefer Modi as the new PM as he gets things done. He is honest, focused, and has business mentality. Yes, I don't like a side of him, but then I don't like a big side of Man Mohan Singh either, and BJP has already been given a chance and gifted us more communal problems.
@AP: I thought you began well but ended unkindly. Many in India are not proud of Mr Modi or the Gujarat events that you refer to. The proper answer can perhaps be given by the Indian electorate at the next general election a few months from now. I am afraid I must stick to my suggestion that Pakistan should turn its back on terror. If it does not, then its home-made terror shall be enough to eat it up, without a helping hand from outside. Instead of blaming others or the ‘foreign hand’, you will do well to look at the widespread conviction in your own country that terror is hurting Pakistan, to put it mildly. You must be aware that some in Pakistan call it asymmetrical warfare when it is terror against India. I have not heard that India was training terrorists on the other side of the Durand Line and sending them to Pakistan. If this were true, I would have much greater respect for Indian agencies. But it is not true. Terror that operates in Pakistan is Pakistan’s own achievement and invention. Many of your fellow comment writers have mentioned Mrs Hillary Clinton’s picturesque phrase. Believe me, this was her original coinage. In my view, she said things tersely and accurately. But you are determined to see India’s hand in every misfortune that befalls Pakistan. If you persist with that attitude, you will never understand your problems, and naturally you will do nothing to solve them. It is not for me or for my fellow Indians to bring pressure on the Indian government to act in any particular manner. The Indian government does not come under pressure. It acts in its own convictions. I am afraid I do not have influence with my government. I am not sure how much influence you have with yours. V. C. Bhutani, Edinburgh, 1 Aug 2013, 1626 GMT
@Lahori: Mr Lahori, Sincerely I am touched with the pain, helplessness and real concern with the blood bath of your countrymen. But what amazes me is the comment of the writer "While the government hesitates to exercise its mandate to formulate a security policy, other than leaking some papers derivative of Malayisan and Chinese policies, the debate over holding the APC continues." What else she expects from the Government of a country that has glorified terror, and killings from day one. That treats terrorists as a strategic assets. A country that believes that there are good terrorists and bad terrorists. A country that as national policy wants to use terrorists as an instrument to deliver thousand cuts to bleed the enemy. Sir, I agree with you the terrorist all over the world including India have only one agenda to kill and force others to accept their supremacy. They are not human beings certainly not the human beings Allah or god or bhagwan desired.
Denial Times the most popular newspaper in Pakistan ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Motto: Tomoorrows Denial Today In Denial We Live.
Weren't Pakistanis cheering and supporting the Taliban rule in Afghanistan? Pakistanis have always been enamored with 'true' Islam and these 'Freedom Fighters' are bringing true Islam to Pakistan!
All the way from the President (Musharaff) down denied OBL and similar terrorists were in Pakistan, despite OBL being the most wanted terrorist in the world. Folks like Hamid Gul are proud of the fact that Pakistan was able to give safe haven to OBL for close to 10 years and considered it meritorious. Denial has been a national trait when it comes to spreading jihad and terror. Why the heartburn now?
I am a non-Muslim Indian. I read the report but I have not been able to take more than a fleeting glance at the 34 comments that have come in so far. The only point that caught my attention there was a rather faint mention of the 'foreign hand', which others seemed to reject. It is easy for me to make a suggestion which perhaps no one in Pakistan will make. It may be that the whole thing - this jail break and earlier jail breaks - were a put on job, consummately executed and complete with re-arrest of some escapees. What worries me from the Indian point of view is that, if this was not part of official policy, then Pakistan is dangerously teetering on the brink of capitulation to terrorists, by whatever name called. TTP has made no secret of its impatience with the State and, much like their comrades in arms in Afghanistan, not ready for negotiation with government. It does not seem from anything that Mr Nawaz Sharif's government has said or done so far that Pakistan has turned its back on terror. Then, how is the rest of the world to expect that the Government (including Opposition), the Army, and the Intelligence are ready and resolved to exterminate terror in the State and Society of Pakistan? And yet Pakistan cannot hope to prosper if it does not turn its back on terror. In its own interest Pakistan should move to put an end to terror operating from within Pakistan. V. C. Bhutani, Edinburgh, 31 July 2013, 2210 GMT
There are none so deaf as those who will not hear. It does not matter how much Pakistan is devastated and burnt by the extremists, a lot of people will keep saying that the Taliban's savagery is the result of drone strikes or there is a foreign hand in all these killings and attacks etc..It is so comforting to provide such simple explanations to complex problems. So, denial has become an integral part of our thinking and a national trait. Just look around and try to find if someone from any political party or the government has anything to say against the Taliban.
Pakistan has always suffered from this 'Denial Syndrome'. First it was an excuse for truth, then it became a habit and finally it has become a conviction. No wonder Pakistan is in such a mess.
Is that new to us.....!
It is not new to us about denial-istam phenomena, we have been grew up with it during the last 66 years. Such things can not be overcome over the night, that is absolutely true.
But, the newly elected governement can announce the change of our country name on the auspicious occasion of August 14, 2013 from "Pak-istam" to "Denial-istan". As we have not been able to get "Pak" in any means during the so long 66 years.
I believe, that can be done in 14 days time period. Our beloved PM is heading towards Mecca and Madina, of course for performing religious activities with his 53 member team to make that trip more closer to God.
This article is also a glimpse into the denialisation of the author. She first raises the right issues and then trivializes everything but generalizing it to all provinces and all governments and all politicians. Come one. Pick up the courage and say it: Imran Khan you take responsibility!
The people who carry out such operations must first and foremost be funded from somewhere : The European Parliament (Policy Dept) has produced a document spelling out the involvement of the Salafi / Wahhabi's in the support of rebel groups around the world. In which they have mentioned KSA, UAE and Qatar is unflattering terms........food for thought. Having said that, I will still hold ourselves responsible for letting this carnage happen.
@Alann: the poetic words of senator hillary clinton are coming true: If you rear snakes in your backyard,it is not that they shall always bite your neighbours, for harming whom, you have been rearing the snakes....... now the chickens have come home to roost.initially, i thought india should build something like the great wall of china, now the womb of civilization has been converted to birthplace of terrorism,by its own children..... so very sad
I love Taliban because this is the only commodity which is showing positive growth in Pakistan.
Pakistan's Army will keep spending more and more on plutonium production facilities and keep on making more and more nukes against India. It doesn't matter even if they lose their whole country to Taliban behind their back, but they won't stop till they have enough nukes to safeguard the whole Muslim Ummah. Meanwhile India keeps laughing at Pakistan on one side while steadily progressing towards a better future and Taliban keeps capturing more & more province of Pakistan on the other side. I can predict the future. At this rate, 2 new countries will form between India and Afghanistan. The bigger one will be called "Islamic Emirate of Talibanistan", and the smaller Israel-sized piece of land which was the former border between Pakistan and India will be the second smaller nation called "Islamic Republic of Pakistan's Army". And the pious people of this new country of IRPA will declare it is a major conspiracy of US, Israel, India, Afghanistan and Talibanistan against the only Islamic nuclear state of "Pakistan's Army". And they will also make sure to print history books of how they countered Hindu Kafirs of Talibanistan and won every battle. And everyone will keep laughing as usual at their stupidity.
I doubt ET's not-paid-on-time mods will publish this comment, but the people need to know the reality of the current state of Pakistan.
Poor Micheal Schofield. He had to get a tattoo and get into jail, had to get a toe severed to get his brother out of jail. Not just that he had to get a bunch of cons out too, in order to get his innocent brother from getting hanged.
Only if he knew.. He could have just hired the Taliban and they could've accomplished in a matter of few hours, instead of taking weeks!
Nasim - in a subsequent programme please ask the experts about the concept of hot pursuit. I mean 70 militants escaping with 250 prisoners - surely there must have been a convoy of buses and jeeps - couldn't even one of those buses be chased down? Can some investigative work be done for a change without the bashing of behruni haath.
As for you blaming others - you quoted to Shashi Tharoor a statement allegedly made by Indira gandhi after the 1971 debacle - granted she must have been thrilled with the victory - but are you saying that 1971 was a conspiracy hatched by Indira Gandhi? You once told a group of baloch students that they cannot seek to draw parallels with Kashmir because there is a question mark on the accession document signed by King Hari Singh. So that puts you in the same category as the Zaid Hamids of the world that believes Kasab was a hindu.
Deny = Didn't happen.
It is not a coincidence that the attack on Abbottabad took place after mid night. The Salala incident also took place in the same time frame and now this prison break. Looks like everybody but we Pakistanis know that there is a two hour window when they are free to do whatever they want. What a shame that so many terrorists at one place with so little security even after prior info. It must all be previous govt's fault.
As 2014 draws near, all parties are gearing up to strengthen their positions. This applies to the non-State actors/ Strategic Assets and their minders too. If anything , one can be assured of more such events in the days ahead.
Though the International community is loathe to interfere in the internal affairs of individual countries, if this paralysis and indifference towards genocide continues, sooner or later there will be calls for UN intervention to save further lives.
Isn't it time now for Pakistani citizens to want to know what the "agencies" do with the billions of rupees of secret funds that is allocated each year? Obviously, these terrorists are receiving advanced combat training and instead of fighting on the borders, they now want to bleed Pakistan. Whose fault is it?
They should fire those who are responsible for the security of jails including the minister who is suppose to look after the jails. On the other hand I must be wishy washy because no heads rolled even what happened in Abottabad, a foreign country attacking deep inside Pakistan, no one had the decency to resign and now nothing will happen and these same incompetent people will be making excuses and will remain there to receive the perks and privileges. Some how Pakistani people stick to these power chairs like they own it and never let go unless the people drag them out of there. Perhaps our culture is such that nothing faze us any more.
Hey, the jail break was organised by RAW.
with so many militants, what can anybody do?
Pakistan is in a state of denial not because of ignorance, bur because no one has enough courage to bell the cat.
Strategic Depth Achieved !
@Nasim Zehra: not making this up. You yourself in your program labelled The UN report as a conspiracy since the report castigated ISI for impeding the investigation. chk the video link that will validate my claim. http://dunyanews.tv/index.php/en/prog_archive/Policy-Matters/4/ep-2361/1/2010-04-20

Drones are forcing the Taliban to free there comrades!
TTP killed ANP workers and leaders and did not allow election campaigning in KPK by them. It thus indirectly assisted PTI through some pre-poll rigging. Once in power, PTI sets 250 TTP prisoners free. Why is it so surprising?
Of course India was behind this.RAW,Mossad and CIA freed all the militants!
@Blind PTIan: What a ridicuilous comment. You need reforms in police, and there is a task force which is making drafts and will introduce these reforms in a month or so, these will take time to implement. There is no overnight solution to this problem? If you wanted such issue to resolve earlier, then should have voted carefully. Be realistic when criticizing, rather than idealist.
@Blind PTIan:
So you guys still want to talk with 'them'? After having successfully attacked so many prisons, military and civilian installations in the recent past and with the dismal resistance put up by your army / police, how long do you think the TTP will wait to get to the 'holiest of holies' - your nukes!
And yet all this is blamed on the 'invisible foreign hand'...
"Foreign hand" stuff isn't my take. You are imagining this or making this up. Sad.
not just the government the whole nation is in a state of denial. majority deep down still consider these thugs as pious individuals fighting for some noble cause. stop bashing policemen and security officials these are ones dying on duty(civilian casualties are equally distressing but the degree of sacrifice cannot be same) without any support (physical or spiritual) from their fellow countrymen.
Great Imran Khan has already solved the problems of Elephants in Africa and now he is solving the Problem of Ayla Malik and afterwards Great Imran Khan will solve the issue of KPK . No one should point fingers at any PTI Official as we are superheroes not ordinary human beings.
I am tired of all this ongoing violence. Tired of lack of government's response. Tired of people's debates about what should be done in their view. Tired of carrying dead bodies of my fellow humans. Tired of forgetting about thousands disabled. Tired of avoiding to think about the people left behind. Tired of the Shia killing. Tired of the inhumane treatment with Ahmedis. Tired of Army's nibbling of the country's already scarce resources. I think I should rest. Rest in Peace.
Ohh Quite esoteric that you are infact acknowledging the denialistan state of Pakistan. I remember you yourself in your programme on dunya news labelled the UN inquiry report (on Benazir bhutto murder) as a conspiracy against Pakistani military institutions by "Foreign Hand"......
