The commander said that elements of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) based in Mohmand tribal region and the Taliban faction in Punjab had launched a combined attack on the ISI office on Wednesday evening.
The commander, requesting to remain anonymous since he was not unauthorised to speak to the media, disputed the claim by a splinter faction of the Taliban, which also claimed responsibility for the same attack.
A man named Ahmed Marwat, who introduced himself as the spokesperson for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (Jundullah Group) had called media persons to claim responsibility for the attack.
Marwat had claimed that the attack was revenge for the death of TTP deputy chief Wali-ur-Rehman Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in North Waziristan tribal region in May. He said the group had sent four bombers to “achieve the target.”
Following Wednesday's attack, a Rangers spokesperson had said that there were at least five attackers and that they had killed at least three of them, while at least two suicide bombers had blown themselves up.
The TTP Jundullah group had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack on security forces.
However, TTP former spokesperson, Ehsanullah Ehsan, has denied the association of Jundullah group with the Taliban.
There has been no independent verification on who was responsible for the attack.

@Zoo paki Nice conspiracy and zaid hamid studies hahaha. Chick hegel was just appeasing muslims for vote
@Khurram: Yeah Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami (HuJI), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Jaish-e-Mohammed, they all originated from Kohat, Peshawar Mardan, etc ..and not Punjab.
@Randomstranger: So you are in competition which province is going to kill more innocent people? I pity you in your ethnic divide have lost all human/Islamic basic values for the life of a human being. Shame on you.
@Khurram: TTP is just an umbrella for the groups like Let, LEJ, SSB etc which have deep deep roots even to the extent of large votes in Punjab.
@khurram....kashmiri,rashid malik ishaq,lashkar -e- jhangvi..are punjabi
@Haidar: Taliban are NOT Muslims. They have alot of innocent blood on their hands and their actions have only brought disgrace to Islam. They are followers of Satan and I hope they meet end soon.
@Haidar:
You said
And that too in holy month of Ramzaan - this is beyond my comprehension!!
Kallu Mama Hyderabad, India
@Khurram
Is Maulana Asmat ullah,TTP Chief Punjab Chapter, who emailed peace talks offer to PPP led government through senior media persons of print and electronic media, a Pushtoon? He was a die hard punjabi.
@Usman:
Why, when we have below from the article? The evidence speaks for itself. Why don't these terrorist acts occur in Punjab?
@Shaina Shah Jiva:
Well said, it is the messed up religious nationalist culture and mindset. Elsewhere there were commentators who basically were vowing revenge against India when they learned of this attack. I don't know what's more insane, the local extremist terrorists, or the local in-denial delusional conspiracists.
@Shaina Shah Jiva: Please refrain from such ignorant comments. Pakistan is doing all it can to stop these terrorists. Pakistani forces have been fighting them and have been able to clear many areas. But just as even the NATO forces have not been able to control the problem in Afghanistan, it has been impossible to control it 100% in Pakistan. You have to look no further than in your own background (India) to see where the arms supplies are coming from. That's just not the opinion of Pakistanis, even Chuck Hagel admitted that. So India needs to stop supporting these animals.
It's sad what happen there buy its more sad when I read my fellow citizens blaming to each other. For godsake stop this nonsense and if you can't speak something good so keep your mouth shut please. Punjab did this, kpk did this and that etc, stoppp Tell me who's responsibility to provide us security? Government? Everyone gave vote to their favourite party? Why don't you go and ask them? Why don't you go and make it happen that they listen your voice? Ask them not me or anyone else please. Pehlay hi Bohat khuch ho raha hai jo tum log oper say ayse battein ker rahe ho :((
@Zain: They don't need to divulge their sources to begin with but the spokesperson is probably calling from safe location or using a disposable cell phone. Even more likely, with your agencies, they already know where they are. It doesn't take a whole lot of brains to figure that out.
@Randomstranger:
This is a legitimate concern. As long as PTI and PMLN continue to show sympathies towards terrorists the responsibility lies with them.
Almost all the newspapers including ET are in touch with the terrorists but ISI has no clue?
@Randomstranger: PTI is condemnable in this because when it comes to TTP crimes, PTI has been indulging in a level of silence which cannot be called nothing less than criminal. They should feel more obliged to at least start condemning terrorist acts by TTP (if they are scared to do more) because they rule a province (KP) where TTP is headquartered and freely operates from. PTI is always quick to file cases in England but fail to act in their own province against open and self-confessed murderers, who have killed even PTI's own MPAs.
so does it mean the good taliban and the bad taliban together?
When is there going to be an operation in Punjab?
Does anyone still have any doubts where terrorist sanctuaries are?
We Sindhis should close maderassahs and kick foreigners out of our province. No more radicalization in our motherland.
@Qureshi
Same as when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would.
@Aysha M
Instead of condemning the incident and showing your solidarity to the martyred officers and police, you use this opportunity to malign PTI in your MQM vs PTI politics.
I think it is time that Pakistan now known as the Terror Nation in Asia set up a committee to hand out awards to TTP as prizes & recognition for each attack. The higher the body count the bigger the prize. The world watches with amazement as Pakistan allows these monsters to carry out these missions then have spokesperson claim credit. A country that allows this heinous acts of violence to happen on a regular basis defines the culture of its citizens.
Muslims are also attacking muslims.
Terrorists are attacking terrorists. Isn't it funny?
Death to TTP.
@Qureshi Yeah Mehsud, Marwats are all Punjabis and live in Sialkot and Gujrat etc.
If The Express Tribune and other media outlets can get into contact with Taliban commanders regularly, why is it that intelligence agencies are not tracing the communications? Why is The Express Tribune honoring the wishes of a terrorist to remain anonymous?
When will Punjab stop producing Jihadis?
Why is PTI taking so long to calm down their TTP brethren? How many more trained personnel and civilians, would satiate the appetite of TTP and other carnivorous animals
