Driven by love: Eloped couple seeks court’s protection

A couple approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday to seek protection, claiming their lives are in danger.


Talking to journalists on the court premises, 19-year-old Abid, a resident of Atam Kallay, Mohmand Agency said he wanted to marry Basmia, an Afghan national, and had sent a marriage proposal to her family several times, but was turned down.

Abid said he later married Basmia with her consent, but without her father’s. The couple then fled the area and Abid claimed his wife’s family members have been chasing them since. He requested the court to provide protection to him, his wife their newborn baby.

According to Abid, the couple got married last year and fled to the house of a family friend in Mardan where their baby was born. Basmia’s family found out their whereabouts upon which the couple fled to Peshawar to seek the court’s protection, he added.
