The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has detained the suspected ‘death squad’ chief of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), according to reports submitted by the civilian spy agency to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday.
The LeJ ‘death squad’ chief, Masoom Billah, was arrested after prolonged reconnaissance, the IB claimed in the investigation reports into the failed assassination attempt on Sindh High Court Justice Maqbool Baqar and kidnapping of a minor for a ransom of Rs50 million in Karachi.
Premier Nawaz was told that significant information was gleaned from Masoom Billah about the June 26 attack on Justice Maqbool Baqar that killed nine people and injured many more. Justice Baqar survived the blast with some injuries.
Billah told investigators that his group was planning more sectarian attacks in the country, according to the IB reports.
Following a briefing, the prime minister directed the IB officials to track down those who were supplying arms, bankrolling and providing logistical support to terrorist outfits in the country, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office told The Express Tribune.
“Acting on actionable leads from sources, the IB Karachi and Sindh police carried out an operation and apprehended Billah from Afra Garden, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi,” claims the report.
It further claims that Billah’s arrest was a major breakthrough in the case as he was not only the plotter of the attack on Justice Baqar but was also the chief of the LeJ’s secret ‘death squad’. Billah reportedly told investigators that the attack was executed by LeJ activists Qari Bashir Ahmed Leghari and Asif Chautoo, while Attaur Rehman was head of the operation.
The report quoted Billah as saying that the LeJ was also plotting attacks against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) politicians for their sectarian affiliations.
Abducted girl recovered
The second IB report was about the recovery of a three-year-old Hindu girl, Mahi Suchdev, who was kidnapped from Valika Hospital, Karachi, for Rs50million ransom. It claimed that the IB in collaboration with the Anti-Violent Crime Cell and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee raided a hideout of the kidnappers in Neelam Colony, Clifton. Three kidnappers were killed in a shoot-out that followed the raid. The child was safely recovered. A CPLC member and five policemen were also injured in the firefight. One of the kidnappers was a cook in the house of the girl.
According to an official statement, the prime minister directed the IB to keep a vigilant eye on terrorists, their cohorts and other criminals. He also directed that the IB should reinforce its countrywide intelligence network by maintaining coordination with all other security agencies as well as provincial law-enforcers. Such an approach, he said, would help in maintaining law and order.
The premier issued the directives during a meeting with IB Director General Aftab Sultan and other senior officials who briefed him about the working of the Bureau, its strategy to thwart criminal activities with a special focus on nabbing terrorists and anti-state elements.
The prime minister also referred to the interior ministry’s briefing last week where he stressed that restoration of peace and elimination of terrorism should be the top priority.
The security agencies, including the IB, have to come up with effective intelligence to pre-empt terror attacks, he said. Now that provision of adequate funds has been assured to the law enforcement agencies, it is up to them to live up to the expectations of both the people and government.

"Major breakthrough: LeJ hit squad chief arrested, IB tells Nawaz"
So what? Is there a judge in Pakistan who would be bold enough to convict this terrorist? History suggests, this guy will soon walk free. Otherwise, there will be dozens of major suicide bomb attacks and massacring of the judges and political leaders.
@lahori: if a person has legs and knows how to walk he can get from one point to another. you might want to look into it.
Arrest is good but he also has to be punished .............. and confidence in the courts to do so is shaky at best.
Last time when Malik Ishaq arrested punjab government paid stipend to his family (ET published this news) now this is the turn of federal government.
@TightPatloon: PMLN also wants to solve these militancy issues by talking to militants. Just a wise thought before commenting is a good virtue to have.
Now what about those people who said that MQM is involved in the killing of their own people. Such a Shame.
Well Done IB and all security agencies who are fighting against such organizations. At the same time my request for the supporters of Religious extremism to wake up before its too late
Thank you Imran Khan!!! :P :P :P
@Aysha M: The biggest enemy of MQM is herself. A self-destruct time bomb.
@Invincible:
Only if the cop is Chauhdry Aslam, then one can witness pure and speedy justice rather than getting victimized by the incompetent judiciary.
Well done!
Great Job...keep an eye on the moulvis of the hills and the galiats, and their movements in Karachi and Hyderabad
They arrested Malik Ishaq earlier as well, but what happened? There is no breakthrough unless they give serious punishment to the culprits.
Good news for Pakistan, bad news for LeJ's financiers in Delhi...
Good job. Nawaz Sharif is clearly tightening the screws on LeJ.
Great news. Keep up the great work IB and police (special thanks to the cops who got injured). Let's hope that the prosecution of the case is strong as well.
Masoom Billa aka Innocent Cat, leader of LEJ's death squad.
Well done IB and best of luck in future...
Kudos to the government! I must some recent developments have given me some hope about the future. I am really glad that PML-N formed the government as opposed to "Let's talk and have give peace a chance" crowd who are of no use.
close all madrasa
Wait...lej was supposed to be operating from punjab right?? Huh..ye to karachi say mila...im confused
Masoom! No wonder it took so long to get him!
This is great news - the crackdown must intensify. We law abiding Pakistanis must get united, help the govt., and raise our voices against persecution, be it sectarian, political or economic. I have full confidence in PM Nawaz. God-willing he'll rid this country of the menace, which is arguably the hardest thing to do in these times. Pakistan Zindabad!
Now don't let this guy get away ..
LeJ- one more after MQM and its leadership
Great Job! Much appreciated. We need more of such arrests.
