The incident happened in Gool, 230 kilometres south of the main city of Srinagar, the officers said on condition of anonymity.
"It is mayhem. Six are dead and dozens injured. The death toll could rise further," said one.
Protesters had gathered outside the Border Security Force (BSF) station to demonstrate against an incident involving troops at a mosque on Wednesday evening, witnesses said.
The troops had entered the mosque in Gool to complain about the loud recitation of prayers by worshippers during Ramadan, the witnesses told AFP.
Worshippers gathered outside the security force station from early Thursday to protest against the incident.
"The BSF soldiers fired indiscriminately, downing protesters left, right and centre," one witness who declined to be identified told AFP by phone from the nearby village of Dharam.

Gentleman, Kashmir has never been a part of India. Yes, it has been occupied by India for a long time. Remember that partition of India (1947) and division of Pakistan (1971) is a universal truth and it is the result of the policy which you & many others expresses usually. I can see further splitting up of both self-styled courtiers in future due to the "conceited manners", "Irony" on one side and lack of ‘so many thing’ on other side.

Here is more information on the subject "Tension had built up in Ramban, where the 76 BSF Battalion is deployed for the security of an under construction railway line, ominously since Wednesday night.
A local who did not want to be named said BSF personnel asked some people who had assembled in the local mosque to desist from late-night prayers.
“Following heated exchanges, the people moved away. The brother of the moulvi of the mosque, Abdul Latif, however, started offering prayers at an unused bridge nearby. There was an altercation between Abdul Latif and BSF personnel, who allegedly thrashed him.”
Preliminary reports from the government had a different version. Minister of state for home Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo said a BSF patrolling party had intercepted a youngster roaming under suspicious circumstances. The youngster, identified as one Shabir, was questioned about his presence in the area and may have been beaten up by the security personnel, Kitchloo added.
He said disturbance was fuelled by statements from the moulvi of a local madrasa who denounced the action of the security personnel as having been sacrilegious. Thousands of protesters surrounded the camp of 76 BSF Battalion around 5am and started throwing stones. Early reports said BSF personnel fired teargas shells to drive away the protesters, but opened fire after the camp came under attack.

The protestors attacked the camp and firing was in self defense. Imagine a HIndu mob attacking a army camp in Pakistan ( something that will never happen ) and then imagine the consequences.

True there used to be the secessionst ULFA movement for a separate state in the North East during the early 90's and a Khalistan movement in Punjab in the 80's. But they have since been dead and buried. People of the North East and Punjab are proud to call themselves indians and are treated with immense self respect
And talking about Kashmir we all know who funds these separatists. They're the same people who invented 'Kashmir Solidarity Day' as a public holiday.

this is incomplete story...mob was not protesting....they were huge in number and too violent and they could have easily killed any BSF jawans present there...everybody including BSF has right of self defence......they are not mad to fire at innocent protestors...the story above is completely one sided.

This is the version of a story told to AFP by unknown people. I havent seen this in any other newspaper. Guys, wait for BSF to confirm this news and tell us what had actually happened there, this seems to be a fake news at present.

Thats why there is struggle for independence in Kashmir, and well there are more then 165 other separatist movements in their country as well. And they all account for acts like these.
